Spread PVA glue on the surface, then add sand.
Spread thinner PVA glue where ever you want lighter sand; typically, the raised areas.
Seal the sand using ultra-thin PVA glue.
Wash the sand in Seraphim Sepia.
Drybrush Khaki.
Lighter drybrush Bonewhite.
