My second game, also against an unknown opponent, and a faction heralded to be nigh unbeatable. I got out my monster list, and let's see what's going on about that dragon.
So let me rant about the mammoths. I read that they are a weak choice, and that's exactly why I brought them to this beginner-friendly tournament. Well, they suck even more than I imagined.
With another unit of slaves brought in via cards, I was quickly out-activated.
Combined with a lack of free movement, my mammoths were outmaneuvered and unable to reach combat. All the while the enemy infantry proved to be unmovable objects, and the slaves put out a surprising number of attacks, reliable once they engaged something already in combat.
Once I got a mammoth into combat, it did perform OK. However, a very mobile cavalry unit quickly destroyed Varamyr, and the bear riders got bogged down in another infantry block.
Soon I was down to a couple of units which were unable to score.
Crushing victory!
And the mammoths won't see the table again soon. I imagine one could do OK in the middle of infantry, moving up and doing damage. But they are unable to control objectives, no extra movement and a large ungainly tray - literally not bringing much to the table.
