Vanguard is always hard to take a picture of.
So here's me, denying deep striking Commanders like a boss.
And here's the T'au, denying deep striking Bloodletters like a boss. The Kroot are far enough forward to keep the drones safe from being declared as charge targets.
Nurglings on the left flank, 2 squads ahead for some first turn charge (or speedbump), one squad on a far objective, denying the corner. Stealth Suits in the center ruin.
Chaos, turn 1
I decided to keep the Bloodletters back and clear out the screens with my own chaff.
Nurglings charged in on the right flank, killed some Kroot and tied down the Firesight Marksman, but did nothing else. The Kroot were in the leadership bubble of the Ethereal, so I did nothing except tie them down.
Beasts and Spawn charged the Stealth Suits and fail to do anything. ANYTHING!
Other Beast and Spawn advance on the right flank.
The first turn went down allright for objective scoring, but I missed the opportunity to start in force with some Bloodletters in combat. Also no first blood.
T'au, turn 1
Stealth Suits fall back, Drones and Kroot advance - as expected.
Several Commanders land and the chaff clearing operation begins.
First turn casualties: 3 Spawn, 1 Beast, Nurglings, Brimstones.
At least most Commanders are down. The fun can begin.
Chaos, turn 2
Landed all Bloodletters in a wide encircling motion. The left squad managed to surround a Kroot and stay safe. The other two just cleared out the Stealth Suits and the right Kroot, and hoped to overwhelm the T'au shooting by the numbers.
I tried to eat at least the Overwatch with some Beasts of Nurgle - 1 died to Commander overwatch. Sad.
I also tried to do a Treason of Tzeentch on a Commander, but failed the cast horribly. It would have been funny, though.
T'au, turn 2
The two Coldstars advance into my deployment zone, kill the Heralds of Tzeentch (it's easy to forget that they move 40 inches or so) and score Assasinate and Behind Enemy Lines.
Everything that can falls back and decimates the Bloodletters, who very obediently die in droves. I popped the +1 invulnerable stratagem on the squad of 30 (where the most Drones were forced to shoot), saving 2 Bloodletters for 2 CPs. They were all gunned down by the end of the shooting phase.
Chaos, turn 3
The remaining Bloodletters spread out to protect the warlord. A squad of 20 fails to kill the Ethereal due to Savior Protocols.
Obliterators land and kill the two Coldstars, denying Skulltaker the Blood and Guts objective.
Turn 4
We played one more turn (going into overtime), where we just maneuvered for objectives and killpoints. I forced the d3 objective rolls such that the final objective was either one I or the opponent held, forcing the T'au player to 4+ 4 VPs between us. I won that, to everybody's great amusement. However, it wasn't enough. While I had plentiful Maelstrom points, I lacked everything else - most of all, killpoints. Final score was 12-8 for the T'au.
Aftermath
The killpoints are the bane of my existence, and I failed to realize that in time, costing me the game.
I also need better and cheaper chaff clearing methods. I was reticent to clear Kroot with the Bloodletters, and it cost me the right flank.
