Painting Dothraki Screamers

Apparently we're painting commission Targaryens now.

Original state

I was originally meant to paint Dothraki Veterans, but they were needed in a tournament, so I got stuck with these guys instead. They were... not as well base painted.

Painting

Start with the horses. Unlike the Lannister and Tully knights, these are unarmored, so the large open flesh areas are well suited for dry brushing. Clean up the two yellowy horses as if they were properly base coated, then do something with the brown ones. A coat of Garaghak's Sewer brought the lighter one up to a passable base tone. Then dry brush both Earth and Khaki before a coat of Umber wash.

Then go for the Dry cracked earth bases, to get rid of the rest of the dry brushing. Coat the weeds Heavy Goldbrown, and wash them along with the earth. Highlight Sun Yellow.

On to the riders. I originally envisioned the Dothraki as dark skinned, but they are already painted in a light tone. Paint them up with Light skintoneMetallic swords, buckles and medallions.

As for the rest of the details, both horses and riders are equipped with un-uniform leathers. So I did rotating paint schemes by base coating the details in various Contrast paints, then highlight.

Finished!
