Review: Assassin's Creed Unity

I know, I'm only about 10 years late. But I played all the previous games, and I just finished this one.

So as a preamble, I loved the first Assassin's Creed, but hated the cage fight type situations. Loved the second one with the added RPG elements; if you wanted to ease your combats, put some time into your equipment. No. 3 was tedious with the hunting, but Liberation was very fun. I thoroughly enjoyed Aveline cosplaying as a slave or a lady. Black Flag was probably the best, pirate themed fun run. And whenever you clean an island of soldiers, they never come back, so it's fun to then hunt treasure chests with your kid. Freedom Cry was about the same, but shorter. Rogue was kind of boring, and I hated the stealth attacks even in liberated cities. So now, on to Unity.

As visible in the picture above, Paris is huge. And I mean huuuuuge. Compared to New York's wooden buildings, these stone edifices are tall and imposing. There are large crowds on the streets, and idle animations are better. The city really feels alive. The flip side is that it takes too long to climb; sometimes, taking a shortcut through the roofs is not worth it.

The story is alright, but the main character is once again a brooding tough guy. Where have I seen that before. Tragedy at beginning and end: check.

So far mediocre, but check this out. Blending into that crowd, feeling the will of the people while taking out the bad guys... that, was worth it.

Now on to the less well shaped parts. They tried to make Assassin's Creed multiplayer here, but I didn't bother at all. I probably lost out on a lot of experience, but I kind of didn't bother with the side missions either. I blazed through the main story line, marveled at the sights, met Napoleon Bonaparte and Marquis de Sade, and that was the end of it.

At least the boring out-of-animus-parts are gone.

All in all solid, but nothing mind blowing.
