While everybody was already starting on Baldur's Gate 3, I was still in the middle of this old thing. Is it great? Not on the level of Dragon Age: Origins. Is it worth it? I loved the first two, I loved the world of Thedas, so I think yes.
The idea behind the story is great, I love how the stakes are always ratcheting up. This time, you must unite Ferelden and Orlais against a common foe. The rift is a novel mechanic and not bad in itself.
As in any RPG where you manage everyone's inventory separately, there was the moment when half the party looked like savages, while the other half seemed to come straight out of a brothel.
Many characters return from previous games, including my favorite Morrigan.
Time travel and other novelties aside, my absolute favorite was the social mission in Orlais, where you had to balance exploration and combat with approval from the court.
Not everything is great, though. The revolutionary change - non linear maps and missions - is also the game's biggest weakness, I'm afraid. I somehow fought through a mission at the minimum required level, and I loved the hard fights. But it propelled me several levels and landed me with several strong items, making other maps a walk in the park. When you slay several dragons without breaking a sweat, that's not great.
There's also the element of going back and forth through the maps. There's a lot of ground to cover, so horse riding was introduced, which is again cumbersome. Not to mention that the game took that as license to make you revisit areas again, and again, and again.
And the same with the collectible nonsense.
And the resource mining. Why can't you just give me the item? Why must I go over the map 50 times to find that last iron deposit to forge my perfect armor? Honestly, I just gave that up after the first try and stuck to whatever loot I could directly gather. But I still had the itch to collect every plant I passed by. So by the end I had some resources and I did craft a couple of items.
The game still went out with a bang thanks to some DLCs I got. No spoilers, but I was raging at one of my companions quite loudly!
