Not many conversions, mostly just scenic bases. Once I was free of the movement tray concept, I could glue in the giants and use the entire surface for basing elements.
Conversions/custom bases
Savage giant with corpse
Dryfit this stylish corpse and the giant.
Attach the giant and fill out the gaps using milliput.
Mag the Mighty with two corpses
He's a bigger giant so he needs more corpses. It was tricky finding two that fit. Same techniques as above.
Wun Wun running with wolves
Fill out the gaps using milliput. Also use it to mask a broken back leg/
Giant spear thrower goat herder
First, the throwing spear conversion. I think it's a black knight lance - I cut off the skeleton hand, and pinned it to the tree this guy is carrying.
Simply filling out the base didn't give me enough of a platform.
I did dryfits until I arrive at a solution: place the giant on a raised piece of cork.
Fill out using milliput and copious amounts of UHU. Leave over night.
Affix the giant and his goats using milliput and glue.
Painting
Prime white and do the Ice base. On to the animals.
Mountain goats
I wanted these goats to be white-ish, but it turns out most mountain goats are brownscale. Except the welsh mountain goat. Improvise by starting off with Nuln Oil.
Ratling Grime mane and tail, Black Templar face, diluted Seraphim Sepia feathered out on the back. Drybrush white.
Dark horns
Basecoat Snakebite Leather. Diluted Cygor Brown and paint the ends, feather out.
Highlight Heavy Brown.
Superhighlight Khaki.
White wolf
Just as previously.
Giant hair
Start with this, to get rid of the drybrushing parts.
Paint this luxurious red mane by basecoating Gore Grunta Fur, then Agrax Earthshade. Drybrush Hot Orange.
Too much orange... drybrush Heavy Orange.
Paint all the black hair Basilicanum Grey, then paint some parts also Black Templar. Drybrush Cold Grey, paint Nuln Oil.
See the painting tips in the next section. I also experimented with browns, by painting the ropes Aggaros Dunes, the leg wrappings Nuln Oil, and the pants Ratling Grime.
Then paint all of it Agrax Earthshade.
Cold white leather/cloth
New painting tip, as per the formula experiment on the Free Folk heroes: Cold (blue) white cloth/leather.
Break out the wet palette
Well, paint the metallics first, then paint the skin and highlight everything.
- metallic bands on shields, Night's Watch accessories
- Corroded bronze bands
- Shiny gold pins on Wun Wun
- medium skintone
- Light leather straps
- Dark leather boots on the Night's Watch and some leather armor on Wun Wun
- Black on the Night's Watch
- Bone skulls, bone ornaments, and this large bone club
- Dark wood
- eyes
- Shiny black obsidian
- Light yellowy wood lance
- Ultramarines Blue banner, darken down with Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade, highlight Ultramarine Blue and mix in Off White
Final details
Fix any mistakes on the rims, spray varnish.
Blood spray
Block off the rim using painter's tape. Then spray Gore Red by flicking an old brush at it. The goal here was to spray the snow and the corpses, but it got on the giant's legs and feet as well. All good.
Then I went in with Blood for the Blood God! on the weapons.
Also on the corpses, especially over the black. Then use a small brush to put blood into the corner of mouths and such, where it makes sense but the spray did not reach.
Undo the tape and check for any faults. Fortunately nothing!
