Dungeon of the Mad Mage: Enter the Matrix

We ended the last session on a real low note, with everybody dead or unconscious. We began this session with an extra player. I asked her if she had any ideas to solve the situation while not being there. At her negative answer, she was lumped in with the rest of the party.

Who were all sitting around the Yawning Portal tavern, eating and drinking.

Wait, what?

That was the players' reaction. Everything alright, just sitting around. Tavern full of people. Good food. Drinks. Immediately, they became suspicious. A particularly good perception check revealed minor glitches in the way the servers moved. So the players started mucking around.

Descending into the pit leading to the Undermountain was impossible, as the pit was full. According to the bartender, Halaster closed up the entrance some time ago.

Killing the glitching waiter only lead to a stern talking-to from the bartender. He paid his insurance to the temple, the guy will be resurrected.

Trying to exit the tavern, with the streets suddenly full of carnival-goers, proved impossible, until Szivem launched a fireball. That quickly cleared up the streets, and just as that, a terrible storm with hail and biting wind came out of nowhere. The adventurers prevailed and marched up to the gates, but outside there was only thick fog. They took refuge in a dwelling, ate and slept, paid the owner, then went back to the tavern.

Groin noticed dwarves not talking in Dwarven, but could not engage them.

The elves seemed fine, but haughty as always.

At the port, Groin built a boat and tried to escape into the dense fog surrounding the city, but after several minutes exited the fog right back into the port.

Solid tried suicide, and he was seemingly out. Groin could not resurrect him. This had Solid's player shut up for the rest of the evening, but always suggesting they follow his lead. Groin would not, being a life cleric. Szivem tried, or at least pretended, until a good enough try, and enough screaming and tantrums, got the town guard's attention. Or whoever was puppeteering the show.

Finally, Szivem negotiated their release from the simulation. They awoke in glass and metal pods, surrounded by mind flayers and their minions. And possessing nothing but their clothes. At least they also got back their friends' corpses.

Despondent, the adventurers (including Brienne) carried their dead friends away, heading back up to the surface. They received some material help from the githyanki, and Groin checked out his bank account, leaving them planning their shopping list for next year's next session.
