Dungeon of the Mad Mage: The menacing doors

Awakening after their long rest, the adventurers promptly forgot about last session's telepathic conversations, and continued exploring the caverns. They met a colony of flumphs, who reluctantly asked them to slay the evil mind flayers.

The adventurers agreed, then promptly forgot again, and broke down the door leading to the githyanki rooms.

I had enough of mucking around (and chit chat), and decided to roleplay the gith. With them not speaking common, conversation was carried out by Szivem and the githyanki leader in draconic. The knight wasn't totally fluent, and I liberally sprinkled in words and expressions in gith.

After breaking bread[1], and Groin getting some booze, the githyanki leader sort-of befriended the adventurers, and offered their help against the mind flayers, provided the adventurers first slay a giant monster. The party agreed. The gith pointed them in the right direction.

The adventurers went on their way, then promptly forgot everything upon seeing a large black stone door. Brienne charged the door, barging through[2] and meeting two mind flayers and a row of orcs. The door shut behind her, and she was not seen for the rest of the session.[3] The rest of the adventurers, who specified staying way back and not reaching the door before it shut, tried to force it open, to no avail. They then noticed the Braille-like writing on the door, and tried to understand that. Szivem ran away in fear, and Ireth slammed to the floor, slapping herself continuously. Groin administered lesser restoration to them both, and he got away with a powerful headache.

After this amount of fun, the party continued on towards the lair of the monster. They ran into an invisible door.[4] Ramming it did nothing, dispel magic did nothing, breaking the rock around it did nothing.

The adventurers returned to the black doors, again getting headaches and not wanting to touch it anymore.

I took back any inspirations handed out throughout the evening because they researched wall of force. But at least they got through the "invisible door" with a disintegrate.

Cue boss fight with a giant tentacled worm.

[1] Tofu.

[2] 20!

[3] Leading to complaints and whining from the player. But hey!

[4] Third time's the charm.
