I decided to paint up a giant gorilla as my D&D party adopted the polymorph trick - and apes are more intelligent than a T-rex. I discovered that I have two - so batch paint them both. And also a weregorilla, while we're here.
Painting
Soft overall drybrush Cold Grey.
I wanted to go for a silverback gorilla type paintjob, so I drybrushed their backs and thighs first Stonewall Grey, then a smaller area Dead White. However, a gorilla has a really white back.
Soulblight Grey is pretty good at establishing a light grey tone, even on black, along with the underlying drybrush. But it still wasn't white enough, so I diluted Dead White with Contrast Medium and painted across the back.
Gryph charger Grey goes across the non-furry parts for that bluish shine. Ratling Grime puts a bit of brown on the forehead. Diluted Basilicanum Grey tones back the grey drybrush across the rest of the fur, and establishes some shadow points on the white.
Undercoat the mouth and teeth Wraithbone. Paint the inside of the mouth Volupus Pink, then go for the teeth. Swamp base. Gorillas have completely black eyes, so nothing to do there.
As for the weregorilla, it had a couple more details to be painted. Medium leather. Faded red cloth. metallic arms and armor.
