Contrast methods
Orange sword
basecoat the power sword Dead White.
Coat Gryph Hound Orange, then a second coat on opposing edges.
Dilute Blood Angels Red and repeat twice, each time on a smaller surface.
Edge highlight Orange Fire.
Spot highlight Dead White.
Traditional methods
Warm spectrum
Amber sword (blended)
Basecoat Heavy Goldbrown.
Blend one half of the blade Heavy Goldbrown/Charred Brown.
Blend the other half Heavy Goldbrown/Dead White.
At this point the white part looks bone-y (not to mention it's not my smoothest blend), so glaze overall Cassandora Yellow to bring back the warmth and marry the colors.
Glaze the edges with a mix of Fluo Yellow/Dead White leading into the lighter parts. Superhighlight Dead White.
Amber sword (glazed)
Basecoat white.
Heavily dilute Sun Yellow and paint several layers of glaze, drawing the color towards the tip of the blade. Leave a hint of white around the power source - the hilt.
Mix 2:1 Sun Yellow and Beasty Brown for the next layer of glazes.
Finally Charred Brown.
Paint it all Cassandorra Yellow, except leave a hint of white.
Cold spectrum
Blue power sword
For completeness: Stegadon Scale Green basecoat, successive glazes on opposite sides of Sotek Green, Thunderhawk Blue, Fenrisian Grey, Ulthuan Grey. Ulthuan Grey edge, then white edge around the lighter end. What I did instead: an unholy wet palette mix of Turqoise, Heavy Blue, Night Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Jade, Sombre Grey until the colors looked kind of-sort of right.
Crystaline sword
Basecoat 2:1 Turqoise + Heavy Charcoal.
Glaze most of it Sotek Green.
Glaze Wolf Grey, then Ghost Grey, towards the end. The glazes look really rough at this point.
Paint a lightning pattern with Ghost Grey, also do edge highlights. This does a great job at hiding the transitions,
Use white to highlight the tip of the blade and a bit of lightning.
