The Atican campaign

It has been some time - several years, all of 9th edition, in fact - since I did narrative games of Warhammer. Well, we thought to rectify that. The edition is still young (I played two matched play games beforehand, and my opponent, none) but why not start in force. Our original idea was a crusade, but as we have not yet seen the crusade rules for 10th, we settled on a full-on narrative scenario (of my own devising) for our first game.

And so the orks invade the Atican system, home of my own guard regiment. Clashes in space and the lucky landing of a single rok on an outlying world provides justification for a low-point game. Can Castellan Mother Theresa and Sister Lucy defeat the orks, while also playing to the whims of Inquisitor Caecilia and her faithful Interrogator Clotilde? Or will Warboss Edkrakka and his retinue, Beastboss Gitstompa (and his faithful squigosaur Missiz Muncha), Grokkit Scrapfinda (riding Ed Buttacup) and Da Surgion, gather enough of a Waaagh! to overwhelm the imperial world?

Stay tuned to find out!

The first phase of the Escalation League came to an end with a small event - a 500 points tournament.

Working on large elementals

I received these guys as a long term loan to use in DnD. I can summon elementals... let's put them on the tabletop when needed. And let's make them look good, while we're at it.

Painting lesser elementals

As I have mentioned before, our MAGUS group has gathered a host of elemental slaves. I initially only painted the glacier elemental - more of an excuse to blend and experiment with blue, really.

Later on, while randomly visiting, I painted a bit of the earth and fire elementals. I have now decided to finish the job. After all, they are part of the party!

Age of Sigmar Meeting Engagement Tournament

We had the first local Age of Sigmar tournament this Saturday. The details and precise results are at the links below; but short version: 1000 point Meeting Engagement scenarios in randomly determined realms.

Of course, playing competitive is no reason to leave the narrative behind!

Menace in the Zarek Valley

As I looked up the pictures from our very first session, I realized... that it was two (2!) years ago. Well, I've gotten old.

We had previously finished our 4E adventure in May 2016. After a short break, we planned to get back into the game in July. It needed some preparation, though.

Storm King's Thunder

After a couple of my players tested their skill in DMing, the responsibility of propelling the story forward got back to me. Would I have the time to construct an adventure from nothing? Fortunately, we did not have to find out, as one particularly enthused player bought an off-the-shelf adventure: Storm King's Thunder. Now all I had to do was stitch together all our previous adventures...

The troublesome ring

Having finished the long campaign throughout the Zarek Valley, I needed to interrupt our gaming sessions due to real-life issues knocking on my door. Fortunately, I had a player volunteer to be DM.

The temple of Seth

After the long romp through the Zarek Valley (not yet published at this point) and the side trek carrying the accursed ring, I had another player volunteer to be DM for a couple of sessions. Delighted, I accepted.

Dungeons and Dragons 4E: Keep on the Shadowfell

Introduction

I have finally decided to tell the story of our 4E adventure! OK, so in fact, this was the 3rd time that I started this adventure. The first times were a lot of fun, but the adventuring groups did not stand the test of time and disbanded after only a couple of sessions. This time, I found (founded?) a persistent group of daring adventurers!

Impressions

Nothing to hide - I was still a beginner DM. As such, even such a pre-constructed off-the-shelf adventure presented its difficulties. Luckily, my players also lacked experience (even more so than myself), so we had embarked on a common journey of discovery (or some other such grandiosely sounding nonsense). However, by this time, being the third try, I was already reasonably familiar with the setting and NPCs enough such that I didn't have to look everything up all the time. I had time to concentrate on what mattered - the roleplaying aspect of it all. I dare say that I did manage to spice up the pre-written dialogs with some flavorful details.

The party

Left to right:
  • Sure Valla, half-elf paladin
  • Random, tiefling rogue
  • Ireth, wood elf druid (and her animal form)
  • Nixi, gnome wizard
  • Alla Hootwise, shifter warlord
  • and a later addition, Thrall, wilden shaman
We started with 5 original members, then took on another Leader-type character when the warlord had to miss a session. Next time I had a party of 6 on my hands, so I had a first, rough introduction into encounter balancing and adding monsters. Later, there were 4-6 players available at any time, so I had my share of work. It served me well later on.

The adventure begins

At first, we were much too excited to take photos. I'll insert map overviews instead. And of course, there was nothing to keep track of all the witty comments, inside jokes and the rest of the fun. I'll write down whatever I remember - although the first session was around a year and a half ago.
Note that the adventure was a free product made available by Wizards of the Coast. You can look it up and research the mechanics underneath. I am only presenting the chain of events from the player's perspective.
