Painting the cultists from the Reaper DDRPG Kickstarter and having fun with new color schemes.
Prime and preparation
Prime white by airbrush. Painting cobblestone.
Yellow accoutrements
First, I painted one in the Dark yellow cloth scheme, to have something to compare it to.
Dark yellow #1
Basecoat in 2:1 mix of Snakebite Leather and Nazdreg Yellow.
First highlight: Desert Yellow. Barely visible, but perfect for neatening out any Contrast-caused pools and splodges. Bonewhite makes for a fine highlight.
Conclusion: a proper dark yellow as compared to the reddish original, will keep this.
Dark Yellow #2
Basecoat with a 3:3:1 mix of Iyanden Yellow, Fyreslayer Flesh and Lahmian Medium.
It looks a lot better with a second layer applied.
Highlight Ungor Flesh = Elf Skintone + Pale Flesh.
Conclusion: same reddish tone just a bit paler. Too complicated to keep.
Bright yellow
Basecoat either Bad Moons Yellow or Ironjawz (should be Imperial Fist which I lack).
Coat with Iyanden Yellow diluted 1:1 with Lahmian Medium.
Highlighting was a pain, Vallejo yellows are just bad. I finally mixed Moon Yellow and white to get somewhat of a highlight.
Conclusion: dislike.
Purple robes
One again start with Purple cloth to have a base of comparison.
Light/pale purple
Basecoat with a 1:1 diluted layer of Luxion Purple.
The original color scheme called for highlights with Genestealer Purple = Heavy Violet + white, then Slaanesh Grey = 2:1 Stonewall Grey + Heavy Violet, but they were both darker than the base tone. Sigh. I highlighted with diluted white and called it a day.
Conclusion: too fancy, doesn't look good enough.
Saturated dark purple
Basecoat Leviathan Purple.
Coat Carroburg Crimson.
A first highlight of Hexed Lichen was a invisible, but Kakophoni Purple = Heavy Violet + Squid Pink looked fine.
Conclusion: looks fine but needs further testing regarding the highlight colors.
Desaturated dark purple
Start with a basecoat of Shyish Purple 2:1 diluted with Lahmian Medium.
Try either with a second layer...
...or Targor Rageshade...
...or Carroburg Crimson.
Recess shade Black Templar.
Highlight Slaanesh Grey = 2:1 Stonewall Grey + Heavy Violet.
Conclusion: the highlight is too abrupt on the left guy, looks fine on the other two.
Further details
Dark leather book and pouches, scrolls as pages and metallic daggers.
Skintone experiments
Experiment with a Tan basecoat.
Reikland Fleshshade as usual.
Highlight Tan.
Mix in Pale Flesh for the spot highlights.
I experimented with Agrax Earthshade instead of Reikland Fleshshade, hoping for a coppery skin effect, but the difference is negligible.
Highlighting with Heavy Skintone is too abrupt.
Mixing Tan and Heavy Skintone for the first highlight produces a negligible difference.
