Chaos Daemons vs Custodes, 20.10.2026

We tested the new Custodes codex! I used a similar list as last time, but I switched out the two Khorne heralds for a unit of Pink Horrors. On the other side... surprisingly many models, with 21 Sisters of Silence present. That, and 9 Terminators with Trajan, plus two Dreadnoughts.

With the Nurglings deployed up close, no scouting for the Sisters.

I got first turn, so... Nurgling jail! No score-able secondaries.

The Custodes moved up to break out of Nurgling jail. I'd have liked if the left Nurglings survived to keep the Dreadnoughts back, but they didn't; and I'd have liked if the center Nurglings died so I can shoot the sword sisters, but they lived. They were also surrounded so I couldn't fall back.

Battle round 2

All reinforcements landed, and I prepared to... not kill the Custodes, but at least bloody them and hold them back. I had the dilemma again where they have a ton of CPs so any interrupt or heroic intervention is possible.

Of course I failed the 6" charge with the Bloodletters, even with a reroll. Syll'Eske and the Daemonettes went in alone against the Custodes terminators. To be fair, it was ridiculous how the termies failed two battle shock checks and died to mortal wounds. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a very bad matchup, with all the heavy attacks and devastating wounds on 5"; but the -1 to hit from the kata just stonewalled my unit hard. And I obviously missed the Bloodletters attacking. This also left the Bloodthirster exposed.

On the other flank, I sent 10 Bloodletters into the Contemptor to hold it up for a turn; it killed 9 out of 10 models, so at least it got held up.

Nurglings died, but I was confident in the center, with the Pink Horrors tanking.

I deep struck everything else defensively to screen out my back.

Sneaky terminators landing on my home objective. Telemon moving up.

Trajan moving in on the Bloodthirster, but failed to kill it. Both that and the combat against Syl'Esske continued.

Battle round 3

Move in with the big guys.

All this made me real sad. Be'lakor shot and charged the telemon, but 2d6 damage only rolled 5 - after a reroll! I decided to hit the sword sisters with the bloodthirster instead of finishing off the dreadnought, so that I keep the center objective with the pink horrors. I killed a good amount, and the plan was seemingly going well. Then Trajan hit the other bloodthirster, it exlpoded and did 6 wounds to the pink unit. It went down to 1 survivor. The telemon hit Be'lakor and brought him down to 1.

With Trajan moving in and killing the other Bloodthirster, everything was going south fast.

Battle round 4

I hit the contemptor with Be'lakor to try and score some secondaries, but Syl'Esske kept missing against the lone terminator.

I deep struck flesh hounds to take the sisters' home objective, but failed a 7" charge with a reroll.

For the custodes, it was just cleanup. Until now I had a slight lead on primaries; but with all my units gone, the golden boys scored like monsters for two rounds.

In the final round, I got tabled and beat at around 90-40.

Sigh.

So what now?

I dislike blaming the dice; but man, they did not help this game.

The custodes are monsters, but they're also highly expensive, so I don't think that's much of a problem.

But the abundance of command points is. Maybe I should have gone all in, balls to the wall, charge everything and hope for the best. But seeing what their units do, and always having CPs for heroic intervention/counter offensive is the biggest deterrent ever.

I still think my list has potential, but I need to put some new stuff on the table. Nurgling jail works nicely; I need to get some more of the little guys. Bloodletters don't do squat without character support, using them for blocking is pointless. Nurglings would do more and more cheaply. Pink Horrors are also cool for blocking, just don't let the Bloodthirster explode in their range. They are very expensive, so having them die to sources that disable splitting is bad. Getting some flamers would be cool, to clear screens without depending on 7" charges which, apparently, are difficult to make.

And I really need to get the big guys involved earlier, otherwise they're just useless points.
