Word Bearers vs Tyranids, 21.07.2022

I took the Word Bearers out for a spin against the Tyranids in this 1000 point Tempest of War game.

Note that the warp lightning storms were unusually active, and we both took casualties during the game.

Painting a thief (slapchop method)

Try out the Slapchop Method on a 28mm miniature.

Painting a Catoblepas (slapchop method)

Try out the Slapchop Method on a larger miniature.

Introducing: the Slapchop method of painting miniatures!

I found this video while browsing the tubes. Now I was a bit skeptical, but ever since I got my hands on the Contrast paint range I am continuously trying to paint good looking miniatures with as little effort as possible. So I decided to try it out! The idea is to prime black, then do a heavy drybrush with a light grey (I used Cold Grey), then finally a lighter drybrush on the focal points such as face and hands with white. Kind of like a zenithal approach but by hand. Then just apply Contrast paints (or other types of inks/glazes) over the miniature!

Painting scrolls

Normally I'd just go with white cloth, but this is useful when you have both on a miniature.

Smaller LED searchlights for Astra Militarum tanks

I loved the LED lights in my tanks, but I disliked the wiring coming out of the back of the searchlight bit. I looked for a better way, and found smaller LEDs.

Custom magnetized accessories for Astra Militarum tanks

In the current Astra Militarum codex, any tank can take items from the 'Vehicle equipment list' - augur array, dozer blade, hunter-killer missile - but only the Chimera kit has these items. Since I have 2 Chimeras and 2 Leman Russ tanks, I decided on converting these items so that any or all of my tanks could equip them.

Disregard the tutorial completely this time. LED work is not compatible with detachable turrets, and I dislike the idea anyway.

Astra Militarum vs Blood Angels, 29.06.2022

GT Nephilim wooohooo! I felt a bit off and took pictures in a chaotic manner. At least the game was short and killy. I rarely get first turn with the nuns, and I managed to fire a Deathstrike missile as well. All things considered, I had fun in this game of Tide of Conviction.

So I got first turn and started off by pushing up the wall of Conscripts, Tank Commanders in tow. Unfortunately I miscalculated ranges, and the two Demolisher cannons stood silent. At least the combined might of my artillery took out a 5-man Death Company squad equipped with Thunder Hammers.

I then immediately got some pointers regarding playing against Blood Angels as the tide of jump pack marines advanced on the field.

On the right, the Gatekeeper tank commander got tagged by Sanguinary Guard.

June review and July goals

Statistically another good month, although right now it doesn't feel like it, as I sit at home sick and feeling tired. But alas...

Hurrah for DnD, my ever constant pillar of sanity and social life. Even though we skipped a session this month, I don't foresee this stopping in the near future. Perhaps in July, we'll finish exploring the 6th level of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

We are now also regularly playing MAGUS! Still surprising, to be honest. We have adopted the DnD-style of play with "more than enough" players, so we can still meet up if somebody taps out. The party is making steady progress through the dungeon, I'll give them that.

With so many RPGs to play, I scaled back Warhammer a bit - just one game of 40k this month. However, with Codex: Chaos Space Marines on the doorstep, I expect this to change in July.

Painting wise, I got things done. I churned out a lot of Bones-type miniatures, as well as my first dragon (commission)! I also finished some Word Bearers, winning me a local painting competition. The Lord Discordant is still WIP, as I couldn't maintain focus and started more projects on the side. Oh well, that just means more Word Bearers to be done this month. And other stuff too, as I discovered the Slapchop Method of painting miniatures - more on this later...
