3D printed Hill Giant

Introduction

With the advent of our new DnD campaign: Storm King's Thunder, I was looking into ways of getting my hands on cheap giants. The campaign features all kinds of giants. I first tried paper minis, as before, but they don't fare well when built to be too tall. There is always the last resort proxying, and I have a few proper miniatures, but nothing in the required numbers. However, when I found out someone had a 3D printer, I jumped on the occasion. Enter the prototype: a Hill Giant.

Chaos vs Blood Angels, 14.12.2017

Mission: Cloak and Shadows

Lists: 2000 points

Chaos (9 CP and about 60 points for summoning):

  • Chaos Daemons: Battalion Detachment
    • 2x Herald of Nurgle
    • 2x 10-man Brimstone Horrors
    • 30-man Plaguebearers, icon, instrument
  • Chaos Space Marines, Word Bearers Legion: Supreme Command Detachment
    • Sorcerer, force staff, jump pack
    • Sorcerer, force axe, jump pack
    • Chaos Lord, jump pack, the Murder Sword, warlord
    • 8-man Chaos Terminators, 8x combi plasma, power axes, power fist on champion, mark of Slaanesh
  • Death Guard: Supreme Command Detachment
    • 3x Malignant Plaguecaster
  • Death Guard: Supreme Command Detachment
    • 3x Malignant Plaguecaster
    • Noxious Blightbringer
A revised list from last time. The Daemon Princes didn't cut it against the shooting of the Fists. Although I think they would have worked better against the close combat-oriented Blood Angels, I decided to throw them out (along with much of the summoning points) to bring in the trusty Chaos Terminators.

Blood Angels (7 CP)

  • Battalion Detachment
    • 2x 5-man Scouts, combat blades, bolters
    • 5-man Intercessors
    • Lemartes
    • Sanguinor, warlord
    • Mephiston
    • Stormraven, twin heavy bolter, twin lascannon, twin hurricane bolters
  • Vanguard Detachment
    • 10-man Death Company, jump packs, chainswords
    • 5-man Assault Terminators, thunder hammers/shields
    • 5-man Sanguinary Guard, swords
    • Sanguinary Priest, jump pack
    • Stormraven, twin heavy bolter, twin lascannon, twin hurricane bolters
A solid list, with some objective holders, two Ravens for firepower, and an excellent close combat punch.

Repainting Bloodletters (1)

Introduction

Among my first painted miniatures were two squads of Bloodletters. At the time, I was happy with how they looked. Now, I considered it was time for some retouching.

Painting horns

Similar to Skulls and bone. Also applies to tusks, teeth etc.

The troublesome ring (3) - Recover and revenge

The adventurers awakened roughly laid out in a cellar, naked and hurting, but alive. Against all odds, they had reached their destination! They were greeted by none other than Bloin himself.

Painting Dr. Evil

Introduction

This one is special for several reasons. First of all, it's a departure from everything I did until now and a deep dive into a modern setting. Second, it was a birthday gift to a good friend of mine.

The troublesome ring (2) - An animated vineyard

We marched ever onward carrying the accursed ring, until we reached a crossroads. As fate would have it, the sign post was torn in half and lying on the ground.

Retouching a knight and adding a cobblestone base

Introduction

A mini I found languishing in between my unpainted stuff. This guy was fully painted (but not by me), but was not based. I forgot to take a before picture. I decided to try something new, and create a cobblestone base using milliput and a custom rolling pin. I did not take pictures of the process, but it proved to be a success, and I'll replicate it soon enough.

The troublesome ring (1) - Party at the crossroads

As the adventurers were on the road exiting the Zarek Valley, they got caught up by Zyn, who ran into a bit of trouble with the human lord due to not understanding silly surface-dweller values.* The first stop of the party was at an inn at the crossroads.

The troublesome ring

Having finished the long campaign throughout the Zarek Valley, I needed to interrupt our gaming sessions due to real-life issues knocking on my door. Fortunately, I had a player volunteer to be DM.

The temple of Seth (3)

We started off by talking to the spirit, although at this point the timeline was somewhat jumbled, and we mixed up whatever we heard last time at the end with what the spirit was telling us there and then.

Wood elf display base

Having painted all the elves from Magic the Gathering: Arena of the Planeswalkers, I decided to create a scenic base for them.

The concept is to have the four male archers in the front, the two females in the back, with the druid standing out in the middle.

Woodland base

The example below is a scenic display base: a surface large enough for me to apply every technique and material that I possess for woodland terrain. For smaller surfaces, such as the base of a miniature, I would not do all - maybe pick two from flowers, grass tufts and bushes.

The temple of Seth (2)

After a short rest, the party moved on from the scene of battle. At the base of a cliff, we noticed a cabin in the woods - with lots of smoke coming out the chimney! We hailed the cabin, but prepared for battle. Eventually, the proprietor came out to talk - he was just cooking dinner for his pet dinosaur.

We talked quite a bit, getting under his skin. Rexxar was a pretty nice guy with a quest of his own. He came from a line of fabled beastmasters (Warcraft fanservice, thank you) and he settled in this region to tame a dinosaur. His pet, Mishu was still a baby, so he couldn't go back to his family yet. He also let us know of the lay of the land, and the temple itself, which he had seen from the outside, but did not approach due to the horde snake people around it. That sounded like a lot of XP, so we decided to make our way there anyway. However, we got along with the guy so well that he let us sleep in his cabin (for some extra safety) and agreed to join us to rid the land of the interlopers.

The next day at noon we reached the entrance to the temple. We took a stealthy approach through the marshes and crept up on the two guards.

Repainting Sir Galahad from the Shadows over Camelot boardgame

Before

Definitely the best paintjob of the lot - since I did not paint this! Back when I was still painting at the Red Goblin store, the goblin on duty had a bored evening and asked me for something to paint. I like the way the dirty yellow coat and the black and yellow tabard came out - nothing to repaint here.

Repainting Sir Percival from the Shadows over Camelot boardgame

Before

A bland figure in full suit of metallic armor and white coat.

After

Alternate metallic armor (blue/green)

Sculpting rocks using Milliput

For all the knights from the Shadows over Camelot boardgame, their base was smaller than the metallic washer I glued them on.

For the guys standing in grass or on sand, the filling did not matter, as it was to be covered with flocking anyway. However, for the last two, I wanted bare rocks, so I sculpted the filling a bit.

Shadows over Camelot diorama

Having repainted King Arthur, Sir Tristan, Sir Gawain, Sir Kay and the Picts, it was time to refurbish my old diorama. I didn't actually change anything on it, except place back the miniatures - exiled to the back of the shelf for some time, but now standing tall after the facelift!

King Arthur and his two remaining loyal knights face off against the traitor Sir Kay and his barbarous Pict underlings in the ruins of the castle of Camelot

Repainting Sir Gawain from the Shadows over Camelot boardgame

Before

The eyes are definitely too stark.

After

Traditional metallic armor

Basecoat using Gunmetal:

Generous wash black.

With larger surfaces, first highlight in Gunmetal. If there are no large surfaces, skip this step.

Drybrush the chainmail in Chainmail Silver.

Second highlight the larger surfaces, again with Chainmail Silver. Edge highlight the smaller surfaces (rivets, scales etc).

Superhighlight Silver.

Repainting Sir Kay from the Shadows over Camelot boardgame

Before

Definitely the worst paintjob of the lot. I messed up the eyes by turning the mini around and not painting both of them from the same angle.

After

Sadly, the face isn't sculpted very well, so the second try still doesn't look 100% right. I corrected the eye again with skintone, but the picture doesn't quite show it.

Repainting Sir Tristan from the Shadows over Camelot boardgame

Before

I like this mini as it's not wearing a boring full metal plate.

The cloak is way too bland - just a purple basecoat.

Upcoming local Warhammer 40k tournament

After a long hiatus in 40k, I'm very excited to get in on the action. The tournament will take place in a single day, with 3 3-hour games for each player. Along some common-sense rules, there is a twist, however: the so-called Highlander rule.

Great Unclean One/Daemon Prince of Nurgle finished

Not much to add here except the pictures. I decided to parade him with wings and tail on the round base, and without them on the square base.

Daemon Prince

Creating a base for a Great Unclean One/Daemon Prince of Nurgle

Introduction

To pair off with the round base, the Nurgle daemon also needs a square base for Warhammer Fantasy.

Toxic puddle

Basecoat Sick Green.

For small puddles, paint over with Nurgle's Rot and we're done. For larger puddles, spread Athonian Camoshade over the Nurgle's Rot.

Then a second, smaller patch of Nurgle's Rot represents the deeper portion of the puddle.

Daemon Prince replacement horn

Basing a Vargheist as a Daemon Prince

Introduction

Another thing that has been sitting on my shelf for ages: a Vargheist painted but not based. An impulse purchase, I did not know what to do with it for a time, until it dawned on me that it is around the same size as the Goblin King that I'm using as a Daemon Prince. With the advent of dual Malefic Talons in 8th edition 40K, this gore-drenched vampire painted in a surprisingly fleshy, human-esque color scheme will fit the mold perfectly.

Fix the paintjob

I really liked the way it was painted. The more fleshy and human-like the appearance, the more disturbing the overall look (uncanny valley?). Then again, I wanted to fix a couple of things.

The model was most likely not varnished, and the paint chipped on the tip of the nose and chin. I fixed it with a dab of Elf Skintone. It looked funny, so I applied the same a superhighlight on the ears and cheeks.

The claws were most likely not finished, left the same color as the skin. I initially thought of doing them bonewhite, but I intend this guy to stand on a pile of skulls, and I don't want the claws to be lost among the bones. I decided to try a more browny color scheme.

Basecoat with 1:1 mix Heavy Brown - Heavy Orange. This should make it stand apart from the skin.

Layer in Heavy Brown, leaving the original around the base of the claws.

Continue 1:1 mix Heavy Brown - Filthy Brown, lightening up the color.

Lighten up further with 1:1 mix Heavy Brown - Bonewhite.

Finish with a slight highlight of Bonewhite.

Blend the colors with some Agrax Earthshade.

Paint the base

While painting the Great Unclean One, I stumbled upon a neat color scheme for dark earth. Not very impressive by itself, but I think it's an excellent background if there are other elements on the base that should attract the attention of the viewer.

Alas, this is the finished base. I first painted the visible ground with the dark earth color scheme, then all the skulls.

Finished!
