Patching up and painting a 3d printed Taurox proxy

I found a cool proxy for a Taurox. Unfortunately, it needed some extra work.

Assembly and conversion 

The original size of this Humvee-type vehicle was too small for a Taurox, so I had a second variant printed a bit wider. Length was about right and height would be compensated with a turret, as I did not want to stretch it upwards and malform the wheels.

As it was, the spare tire looked a bit funny when stretched sideways.

So I covered it up with spare vehicle bits.

Add an enlarged cannon to compensate for height, and scrounge a turret hatch and stormbolter.

Painting

All the usual:

• Scratched black metal armor
• Dark metal guns
• Shiny gold aquila
• Weathering tank threads wheels

I took advantage of the large flat back for a freehand. She deserves a name, after all. I went about this differently than before. I actually started with the freehand detail, and painted the weathered armor afterwards; this allowed me to do the weathering (which chips into the scrollwork) all at once. I did paint the guns and other details in parallel, while the large and thick basecoats dried.

Start with a Heavy Brown undercoat. Several layers until it covers the black.

A basecoat of Wraithbone works a lot better on brown than on black. Also several layers. Then I traced the scroll using Khaki, and the writing in Nuln Oil. I got a good impression of what I was going to do, and could easily enlarge the scroll at this point.

Cover up the scroll corrections with Wraithbone. Cover up the writing as well, but not 100%. Also at this point I traced the portrait with Nuln Oil.

Stiple Agrax Earthshade on the scroll.

Simulate highlights on a curved surface using Bonewhite and Wraithbone.

Trace the writing Basilicanum Grey. I found this works better than the very strong blacks or Cygor Brown. Also trace the portrait. So far, so good.

Drawing the nose and mouth was the hardest part. Several re-dos later, this is how she looks. 

I traced the scroll Cygor Brown, for contrast and well defined contours.

Do the weathering; make sure to chip into the scrollwork, but don't obscure any important details.
