Painting a tiefling warrior

Introduction

I initially wanted to create a tiefling rogue miniature for my previous DnD party, but by the time I got around to convert his right arm, the campaign was already over. However, it's time he made a surprise comeback in our current campaign...

Painting

Prime

In black.

Wolf pelt on his back

Armor

I wanted to depart from the usual gunmetal/black wash/silver highlight metallic armor, so I decided on different hues. Nevertheless, basecoat with gunmetal... (the swords also, at this point)

... and highlight with silver.

Wash overall with blue/green (Coelia Greenshade).

Highlight with silver.

Wash the recesses with dark blue (Drakenhof Nightshade).

Highlight with silver.

With the recesses having a slightly off shade of blue/green, the armor shows off a magical glow.

Skin

Basecoat in reddish brown.

Highlight with dark red, leaving the recesses alone.

Edge highlight (fingers, cheeks, nose, brows) with bright red.

Eyes

White eyes with black wash and white highlight, but no irises.

Leather

Basecoat in brown.

Paint the belt and the straps on the bracers with leather brown.

Wash with brown.

Highlight with the base colors.

Catch the buckles on his arm straps with gunmetal and wash in black.

Horns

Basecoat in bonewhite.

Overall wash with sepia; then wash half with brown; then wash only the base with black.

Highlight the tips in bonewhite.

Swords blades

Use the poison blade and green powersword painting tips.

Sword hilt

Gold and bronze basecoat.

Wash brown.

Subtle gold highlight. Do not highlight the bronze, for contrast.

Basing

For a suitably menacing look, I tried my hand at painting lava.

Rocks

I interpreted the rocks he is standing on as solidified lava.
First, a drybrush of dark grey.

Then, a lighter drybrush of light grey, concentrating on the edges.

Lava

Mix dark red into PVA glue, but don't dilute it otherwise. Then layer in on the base, around the rocks. Multiple layers work best, as the glue shrinks when setting. Leave it to dry well.

Bright red highlight in the middle of the lava puddle.

Then layer up from bright red, through orange, to yellow.

Red glaze to mesh the colors together, then yellow line highlight to reestablish the contrast.

Finished!
