Breaking hearts: a D&D 5E one-shot

Due to all the messed up schedules, we settled on doing a one-shot instead of our regular games. Without further ado, the adventurers arrived in a village where everyone was depressed due to young couples gone missing. Obviously, the party accepted to track them down.

  • Jaskier, human bard
  • Xirat'P, goblin sorcerer
  • Famine, hexblood ranger
  • Emanon, warforged cleric
  • Chackie Jan, wood elf monk

A local hunter saw the latest couple gone missing descending into Heartplunge Cavern. Local legends say monsters live in the cave, and nobody goes in there, so they had no business going in. The adventurers were led up to the cave, and they descended, magic lights glowing, loudly talking about the useless villagers. Cue ambush. Rocks fell on the adventurers, and winged kobolds attacked them with shortbows.

The party made short work of the kobolds. However, one arrow did sink into Famine, disappearing in a puff of rose-smelling smoke. He immediately fell in love with Xirat'P, thus revealing that this is actually... a Valentine's Day adventure! The roleplay between the players made my day, and Famine got his inspiration. The bard as well, immediately noticing the change and playing merry tunes on his lute. Emanon offered to marry them on the spot.

A couple of winged kobolds - kulpids - escaped, and jumped into an underground lake. The adventurers followed, but were greeted by a beautiful human woman. Under the effects of a Zone of Truth, she revealed that the cavern is home to a dragon, whom she must serve, and cannot leave. She bade the adventurers destroy the dragon and keep all his hoard, which they immediately accepted.

After a short rest, the adventurers decided to tackle the lake.

Emanon walked in first, but was attacked by a swarm of hungry quippers. He retreated.

Plan b: Emanon and Famine would go in invisible, trailing ropes. Then they would pull on the ropes, and the rest of the party would swim and be pulled, going through faster and avoiding the fish. A great plan. Except this is what greeted them on the other side. Instead of retreating, Famine jumped into the fight. He was almost immediately brought down. Emanon fought on, trying to take the ranger's unconscious body, but was thwarted. Sensing the tugging on the rope, Chackie jumped in, but was badly mauled by the fish, then knocked out by the kulpids.

The bard and the sorcerer then tried going in also invisibly, but saw what was up and decided to go back to the dragon's wife. Who was revealed to be a succubus, in command of the kulpids. The surviving adventurers were brought to the back of the cave, chained up with the missing villagers, then sacrificed in a demonic ritual.

Emanon and Famine bled out, but Chackie stabilized. He woke up, only to be eaten by the dragon.

TPK.

At least we had fun! Right, guys? Right...?
