Deployment

I "won" the roll-off for deployment. I chose deployment zone, the Grey Knights/Custodes deployed first and went first. I did not manage to Seize the Initiative.

Strike squads and characters in the Stormravens.

Plaguebearer bunker, all characters inside. Nurglings on objectives. Bloodletter bomb in reserve.

Imperium, turn 1

Seeing their hated warp spawned enemy, the Grey Knights rushed out of the Stormravens.

A large Strike Squad used their psychic Gate of Infinity to teleport behind enemy lines and unleash bolter fire on a squad of Nurglings.

The Stormravens engaged in an encircling maneuver. One tried, but failed, to clear the ruins infested with Nurglings. Everything else - everything - fired shots into the line of Plaguebearers. Some daemons survived, but their lines buckled and faded back to the warp.

What hurt more was that the single remaining Nurgling also faded back to the warp (on a morale roll of a 6, CP reroll into a 6 again).

Chaos, turn 1

The veil between realities ripped open, allowing jibbering hordes of Pink Horrors to spew forth from the Immaterium. Two hordes of 30, to be precise. Also more Nurglings, to hold the objective and block the Strike Squad.

The daemons then tried to empower their new servants, but failed miserably. EVERY. SINGLE. CAST. ATTEMPT. OK, I did get off a Smite for 1 MW on the silver Stormraven. And Boon of Change for 1 extra attack on one squad. CP reroll into the same result.

But the daemons were still somewhat empowered by the presence of their masters (+1S, rerolling 1s to hit and to wound in the shooting phase) and they let loose their flickering flames. Two Strike Squads were burnt alive in their power armor and went down shrieking. The Daemon Prince of Khorne, wielding the mighty Skullreaver, jumped at a Stormraven and hacked it apart in a terrifying explosion.

So a reasonably successful turn, given everything that went wrong.

I scored for killing more and holding one objective for Maelstrom. Things that went wrong: the Nurglings previously failing their morale check on rerolled 6 denied me the objective holding as well as Supremacy. Failing all psychic powers to buff the Horrors and weaken the enemy meant that a lot of shots were wasted. No wounds were inflicted on the Stormravens. The black Raven exploded, dealing 2 MW to my Daemon Prince of Khorne. This will come back to bite me later on.

Imperium, turn 2

The Shield-Guard Captains charged forward, massacring Horrors by shooting and close combat. Draigo also charged in, hacking daemons apart. One Shield-Guard Captain charged and killed my Khorne Prince - by a hair. Had the Raven not exploded...

At least the Stormraven didn't kill all my characters. My Warlord Daemon Prince was left at 1 wound.

Chaos, turn 2

All in! The Bloodletters clawed their way into reality.

The marines stood no chance, but the Captain, protected by his psychic Sanctuary and Warding Staff, resisted the onslaught.

Even though the number of Grey Knights was diminished, the daemons still felt it night impossible to manifest their psychics. In an act of final desperation, the Prince, the Herald and the Sorcerers charged the Shield-Guard Captain, leaving him at 1 wound. Retaliation was swift.

Imperium, turn 3

The Imperials moved in for the killing blow, and I was left with only the Bloodletters and Bloodmaster. I was also behind on points. Given the amount of firepower still on the table, I conceded.

Aftermath

I usually try not to blame the dice for losing, but this game was hard on me. Obviously the Grey Knights/Custodes soup was a stronger list, but I felt that I had a fighting chance after the Horrors landed. Hope faded fast. 20-0 to my opponent. Better luck next time!
