D&D 5E one shot collection - Attack of the giant chicken

The adventurers had previously arrived at Farmer Hershel's farm, and the old man asked for their help. His prized chicken had accidentally drunk his unstable growth potion, and was peaking at the adventurers from behind and above the house!

I laid out the technical details: there's a "Chicken complication table" that they have to roll on 12 times until the potion effect wears off. The first roll immediately resulted in the farmer's nosy neighbors coming to eat some giant chicken.

The adventurers hurried towards the corn field, where the hungry farmers had begun peppering the giant chicken with stones, arrows and darts, while also releasing their mastiffs.

Ulfgar grabbed a shovel and some rope, intent on mounting the chicken. Unfortunately, he failed his checks and just stood there, while a dog jumped him.

Niko took a shortcut through the farmhouse, but failed his checks to break through the shutters - twice. After 3 turns he broke through, jumping from window to barrel to fencepost - then failed while jumping to the other fence, landing hard on his face.

Wizzik infused the chicken with divine protection.

Bernie climbed the fence, shooting his bow at the intruders.

The battle quickly took a turn for the worse. The chicken ate the dogs, and Ulfgar decided to leave - taking a huge hit on an Attack of Opportunity, falling to the ground, almost dead. Bernie shot one of the intruders, receiving arrows in return, also falling unconscious - but rolling a 20 for his death save, immediately reviving. Niko was still useless two turns in, trying and failing to climb a tree. Wizzik stabilized Ulfgar.

The party, now kind of back on track, prepared to charge - but the chicken got spooked after an arrow through the gullet, and flew away. The intruders warned the party to stay away, as they retreated.

We followed up with the adventurers chasing the giant chicken through the land. It flew every which way, with the party watching from a respectable distance. The hungry farmers tried to catch their meal a couple more times, but Wizzik spooked the chicken each time, using his intimate knowledge of animals[1].

The adventurers chased the chicken back to Hershel's farm, once again coming up against their hungry neighbors. Un/fortunately[2] the chicken got an arrow to the head in the first round, becoming spooked and flying away. The farmers again retreated, and Bernie missed his revenge shot. This time, the party chased the chicken to its final stop, and the potion wore off.

Ulfgar grabbed it and placed it between his thighs, pretending to ride it - winning his bet against Bernie.[3] Then they took it back to Hershel, who paid them handsomely.

We finished quite early, and had a talk about the adventure and D&D in general. They were actually quite lucky, as murdering the hungry farmers or letting the chicken eat people (especially in the crowded town center) would result in the militia descending on the adventurers and locking them away for manslaughter.

[1] And his -2 Charisma modifier. It worked against all the odds, with two critical successes in a row.
[2] Depending on your point of view.
[3] 10 gold on who would ride the giant chicken first.
