Free Folk vs Greyjoy 10.09.2025

Things are happening on the ASOIAF front, but for now, here's a game where I try out Mance Raider as commander, versus my old opponent taking a new army for a spin. Surprising nobody, the Greyjoys deployed in a refuse flank. I countered  them on their own flank, while also making a play for the other flank. The Greyjoys retained their ability to choose first player, so as to direct the arrival of outflankers.

Round one went about as expected, with NCUs trading blows and armies positioning.

On round 2, the Ironborn Reavers arrived from outflank, as expected, on the flank where I did not have cavalry moving units. I pulled Mag back, baiting a long charge.

The Reavers did not charge, instead taking the objective. We both held 2, and the points gathering began. I lost my Boar in the first volley from the castle walls, but it still got me a point.

On round 3, my own outflankers, Trappers lead by Jon Snow, arrived in the back of the Greyjoy army.

The archers unloaded into the Thenns, but they got charged by Mag. Mag smash!

Why did my opponent place the stakes in the middle? I got no clue, but a good taunt made the Ironmakers charge right through. Their sacrifice was for nothing, as they couldn't even hold the objective.

On the right flank, the Trappers got bogged down by Drowned Men - a really nifty unit for 4 points. Every time I look at what other factions get for 4 points, looking at you Lannister peasants, I wish Raiders were better. Anyway. Mag was putting in work by holding down the entire flank on his own, while Varamyr and the now boarless Raiders held the objectives.

Still at equal amount of points.

At the beginning of round 4, the Ironmakers made to strike at the Wolf Pack, but died to the stakes. Go 3 on a D3! That felt just like the dragonfire I received a couple games back.

At the end of round 4, more repositioning, as I awaited the return of the slain Ironmakers due to Balon NCU. Nothing was engaged, the table was open for shenanigans.

At least the Reavers were dying slowly to the castle wall.

Looks like I got way too excited and forgot to take pictures of the final moments. I blame it on the long game; it took almost 4 hours to play through.

But here's what happened.

On the right flank, I made a play to destroy the Iron Victory Crew by turning them off with Jon Snow and charging in with Mag. Unfortunately they survived, healed back up, and then, combined with the drowned men, killed Mag. Stupid precision rule. I did some ineffective shots with the Trappers.

On the other flank, the Ironmakers came in to charge and kill my Raiders, and take the objective. Due to Endless Horde, I brought in another unit, charged the archers, then retreated in such a way to block the objective.

With Varamyr holding one objective and the Ironmakers the other, that flank was a wash anyway. However, I might have lost Varamyr to the castle wall fire. So I charged him in, along with the wolves. I left the Ironmakers at 1 model, so no extra points, but nobody held either objective, so a wash nonetheless.

Narrow victory at 11-9.

With this, my Free Folk badge is unlocked as I have used and won with all commanders.

Mance is... not good, though. His unit rule with the 3+ denying orders/cards came in only once and I rolled a 2. I don't have a good unit that could stand in the middle of the action and use this to good effect. His cards are fine in a void, though situational. I much prefer Thormund's autocharge 6, or Mag's overrun, or Varamyr's endless zoo.
