Deployment: Spearhead Assault
My actual spearhead of Flesh Hounds and Daemon Prince (and Spawn, I guess). Horrors and Cultists spread out in the backfield.
The Imperial Fists screen of Tactical Marines hides a squad of Aggressors in the cover, then the Hellblasters behind them. Chapter Master and Lieutenant between them. Scouts infiltrated forward in two ruins and behind a hill, and also around the backfield.
We finished second and lost the roll-off but managed to Seize.
Chaos, turn 1
The bane of deep striking armies are, of course, the screening units. Our measurements said that the Flesh Hounds are in charging distance of the Scouts. So it was time to set chaff against chaff.
The bottom assault went best, as only 3 Hounds got in combat, but they killed the 5 Scouts. I consolidated forward, just to present an obvious threat. The middle Hounds charged the Scouts across the wall (not crossing the wall, because they are not infantry, but reaching them nonetheless) and killed them, then ran into the wall for Daemon Prince shooting denying purposes. The topmost Hounds got all in combat, but managed to leave 1 Scout alive. Oh well.
I also got off a Smite and killed some Tacticals, and the Cultists managed to chip a wound off an Aggressor (for the lulz).
Astartes, turn 1
The Marines knew they had to deal with my Hounds. However, they also faced the Daemon Prince possibly charging from behind the wall, not caring about the vaunted Aggressors' overwatch, and annihilating them. So they committed a crucial mistake: they fell back. More on this later. The Inceptors dropped in to deal with the left flank. The Death Company also dropped in the leftmost ruing, hiding behind walls.
Gratuitous amounts of shooting finished off both Hound squads.
Chaos, turn 2
The retreat of the Marines left the middle ruin wide open for a teleport strike. Obliterators and Abaddon landed, then opened fire with Cacophonic Choir. The shooting phase was exceptional, with great results on the D3 weapon stats (noted by the red dice, bottom right), and Abaddon mitigating bad to hit rolls. The Aggressors were vaporized, and the Hellblasters ran away after taking a beating.
Cultists charged the hero Scout who fought back and killed some.
With most of his army neutralized, the Imperial Fist player sat back to let the Blood Angels take over the show.
Astartes, turn 2
Death Company jump from the ruins unto the cover tile. All the characters descend next to them.
Stratagems allow the Death Company to make the charge; the rest fail. To avoid horrible wobbly model syndrome, we simulated the combat on the top level of the ruin using the dead Obliterators (ignore cover chapter tactic did something!) and Spawn. While the Death Company marines did a good job of chopping the faces of the Obliterators, Abaddon's Heroic Intervention assured their swift demise. Lots of attacks and Death to the False Emperor! on 5+ really did a number.
Chaos, turn 3
Everything moves up, and the Daemon Prince sets hungry eyes on the cluster of characters. As I began to lay down my 30 Bloodletters, the opponents conceded.
Aftermath
This game was awesome, and not (just) because we won. As we were moving models around, smiling and joking, somebody remarked that we should be a commercial for Warhammer. Hell yes.
Tactically, the game went our way. Chaff killed chaff, as expected, but we got the alpha strike with the Obliterators, who did very well. Abaddon is a beast. By the time the Bloodletters landed, we still had most of our killy units, while the marines only had the Sanguinary Guard in reserve.
I guess that the marines should have turtled... maybe that way the Scouts could have kept the Obliterators off the important units.
