Painting a Rage Drake

Introduction

This is my first experiment of using multiple layers of different Contrast paints, instead of doing traditional highlights on a Contrast basecoat.

Painting

Prime Wraithbone.

Paint the underbelly Iyanden Yellow, then paint the scales in Talassar Blue. I had to do this in two steps, and clean up any slops with the yellow using Wraithbone.

I did a second layer of Iyanden Yellow on the underbelly to deepen the color and the contrast.

A second layer of Talassar Blue goes about halfway up the scales, darkening the back but still keeping it a vibrant shade.

Leviadon Blue is dark enough to cover over, so I used it to create stripes for some visual variation across the back.

Maybe this would have been enough on a model with deeper grooves. Here, I did a light drybrush of Electric Blue mixed with Dead White on the back, and Sun Yellow mixed with Dead White on the underbelly.

Finish off the details by painting Volupus Pink inside the mouth and highlight it with Warlord Pink.

Then clean up the teeth and claws using Wraithbone, and apply a layer of Skeleton Horde. Now these details are too small for any real contrat, so I also did a highlight of Wraithbone. This in turn made them too light and clean, and I reapplied Skeleton Horde for the perfect amount of discoloration on the surfaces and deepened shadows.

Basing

Woodland base.

Finished!
