Painting a Red Slaad

WizKids preprimed Red Slaad painted as illustrated for 5E.

Painting

For the red skin, basecoat Baal Red, then shade 1:1 diluted Blood Angels Red. This creeps into the recesses without darkening down the paint scheme as Carroburg Crimson would.

For the purple belly, I started with a coat of Volupus Pink, but it is barely visible.

Diluted Luxion Purple is still not good enough.

Diluted Hexed Lichen was the solution.

Drybrush Bloody Red, then Orange Fire. I just did the same on the purple part as well, as the drawings show red highlights on the belly area. Finally, highlight the face and knuckles using Orange Fire.

Paint all the claws, fangs and bony protrusions as Bone.

Paint the eyes black, then add white dots as for a gem effect.

Basing

Simplified wasteland base and then some bushes. The aim was to test how my UV resin behaves with the bushes, as the old Vallejo Still Water had a pronounced capillary effect.

This, however, is a much thicker liquid, and just flows over and into the bushes. It does climb up a bit at the borders, but the hobby knife easily solves that.

I also tried mixing Athonian Camoshade into the resin before pouring it onto the base. Mixing was difficult, as though the liquids are incompatible, but much stirring finally yielded results. I poured the mix over the bushes, and found the quantity lacking, so I just poured more over. The two batches didn't really mix either, so the greenish effect is pronounced here and there while the "water" is clear otherwise. I love it.

Finished!
