Dungeon of the Mad Mage: Goblin child dies, adventurers not impressed

After last session's first live reunion, we got back to the nitty-gritty. The DM gave us the choice of where to continue, and we chose Waterdeep - I had questions to ask.

First, I had a business idea concerning the magic beer on lvl 2. Different inns gave different potential prices - so far, so good.

I then talked to the Zhentarim boss - he was not completely sold on the idea of kicking out the Xanatar boys from Skullport, given their entrenched positions and possible reinforcements. We'll get back to that later.

We then traveled to Skullport through Azok's settlement. Solid chose to do a service instead of paying for the passport, and they bid him look for the drow of the clan of the Iron Eye.

We got to Skullport and discovered it to be a much bigger settlement than I originally imagined. Ramshackle buildings lay one over the other in several tiers - we went through them all.

On the bottom tier, we only found a deserted slave market and a small shop selling docile zombies. The witch proprietor had no interest in sharing the knowledge, so we moved on.

On the middle tier, we visited a reputable tavern - The Falcon and the Dragon. Tari found her contact and gave over the moonstones, earning some renown with the Harpers. The innkeeper found us to be trustworthy, and told us about the history of the Undermountain.

Our next visit took us to the top tier, where the Harpers had moved into a small derelict fortress. Their dragonborn leader told us about the only mage in the Undermountain capable of teleporting out, and the steep price she asks for her services. We asked about the Iron Eye dudes, who turned out to be duergars instead, and found out where to look for them. We also got bad news about the Xanatar keep, which is apparently home to over 100 guards.

Next up, a visit to the Zhentarim HQ, where we met the tiefling Bosskin. He had nothing special to say, but offered to take out messages outside if needed. He had additional info about the layout of the Xanatar, but gave no hope of conquest.

Itching for some combat, we visited a baleful spider-like building, where we were beset by... giant spiders. They descended from the ceiling, with the first one instantly killing the little goblin girl, who was unfortunate enough to be in our company. We killed the rest, and found empty rooms that would serve well as a place to rest. And so we did.

We wanted to move on, and visited Azok to tell him about the Iron Eyes. He asked if we had met them - Solid tried to lie, but got caught. Somehow we found out that the duergar are responsible for the theft of the dagger, and so back to Skullport and the tavern where they are usually found.

The DM described The Guts and Garters as a western saloon, with people hitting each others with chairs, drinking, piano, etc. I disguised myself into Terrence Hill - quite fitting for the occasion. As we entered, the scene froze and the piano stopped. I yelled "Barkeep! A beer! The rest of you: carry on!" And everything was fine.

My first idea was to find some poor drunk who had run out of money and invite him over for a beer, but the dice decided there were none of the sort.

Solid then tried to make friends by smashing a chair over a half-orc. The dice said he hits like a girl.

Finally, Selene went over to the table of the somewhat angry, burly men, only to fail her charisma check. Not one to back up, she brought them a round of beers, then asked about the Iron Eyes. She wasn't extremely convincing, but they finally settled on a game of dice. The DM played the game "bullshit" with her live, and she won the last round with a sleight of hand and a luck point. We found out that the duergar had actually left to the 6th level of the dungeon.

Oh well.
