The second 2000 points outing of the Word Bearers, a bit adapted from last time to test how does 180 points of Obliterators compare to a 170 points Predator Destructor. We played the Conversion scenario from Warzone Nephilim.
The Necrons won the roll-off to start. One day, I'll win. But it was not that day. Thanks to the Deceiver, the Wraiths and Scarabs assumed forward positions. I was warned about this, but I still always get surprised by the maneuverability and speed of the Necrons.
Battle round 1
Not to mention the first turn charge by the Scarabs, annihilating my Cultists and tying down my Land Raider. Sigh. When will this ever not happen. And they took all 3 middle objectives. Points galore. And Szarekh and the Overlord shot to pieces my Rubrics, leaving only the Aspiring Sorcerer standing.
On my turn, I spread out as well as I could, but I was pretty well boxed in. However, the opening volley of my shooting phase saw the Predator destroy both Menhirs and seriously wound Szarekh himself. I spent literally everything else I could to destroy Szarekh, even the Tzeentch-marked Legionaries fired twice. I did manage to destroy him, with the final bolter shot of the final volley. That was tense. Then he exploded, killing the Technomancer and wounding everything around. That felt nice.
Battle round 2
As good as it was to take out Szarekh, not only a strong shooter, but an excellent fighter and force multiplier, I still had the rest of the Necron forces to contend with. With amazing speed, the wall of Canoptek constructs and Destroyers descended on my army.
Ophidian Destroyers charged and killed my Bikers, taking out my hopes and dreams related to the far left objective. Wraiths charged into my bunker of Obliterators and Legionaries, killing some, but we held the line. More Wraiths charged and killed my Venomcrawler, who had made a play for the right flank. Finally, Skorpekhs charged into my right, taking out the remaining Cultists and the Master of Possession.
And of course, consolidating into my Land Raider again.
Not only was I at a serious points deficit, but there was stuff in my face. That settles it... it's Terminator time! The combined firepower of what was left took out the Ophidians, the Apostle chopped up the Skorpekhs, and the Terminators charged into the Death Hex'd Wraiths. Not so tough now without your invulnerable, are you? I did leave a serious dent in the Necrons, and prepared to break out of the box next turn.
Battle round 3
Focused fire from Heavy Destroyers and the Deceiver himself took out some Terminators, while the Overlord circled around to score more kills. The Necron secondaries are just ludicrous. And of course he consolidated into the Raider.
Staring down the shard of a star god, the Terminators held the line.
On my turn, I did break out. With Smite, melta fire and close combat, I cleared out the middle.
I consolidated into the Scarabs, sacrificing my Dark Disciple in exchange for more movement.
Battle round 4
The Necrons sat tight and scored points.
I continued moving out, mowing down the Destroyers with ranged attacks.
Battle round 5
The Necrons scored even more points, as I expanded into every corner of the map, took all the objectives, and tabled my opponent. That was a first!
We tallied up points to a Necron victory, but it was close... a lot closer than I thought it would be. 86-75!
In conclusion, the Chaos Marines are quite killy, and I think that I did a better job playing them this time. D6+2 lascannons are nice, and I definitely would not bring the vehicles had they been equipped with just regular lascannons. I still have a lot to learn regarding target priority and taking objectives. And about the opponent's secondaries. Because wow, the necrons have easy ones.
