Fixing the head of a demon

Introduction

It's a somewhat funny story. A friend bought a Reaper Fire Demon in a brick-and-mortar store in England; only a couple months later did he realize that the package had been tampered with and the head was missing. On a later visit to the US, he mailed Reaper to get an extra head (along with some other stuff we ordered, of course). They sent him another full model. He commissioned me to craft a head for the headless body.

Initial ideas

I looked to my considerable stores of Warhammer daemon bits, but none of them fit, or were the right scale. I thus decided to partially recast the original head.

Recasting

This is the torso and the original head. I recast the two parts of the head using blue stuff, milliput and green stuff.

Modeling

Note that each step takes place after a minimum of 24 hours after the previous one, so that the green stuff properly sets.

Step 1: use green stuff to glue the two parts, somewhat imitating the original pose.

Step 2: the lower part of the jaw is flat, so I used green stuff to sculpt a ridge imitating the throat.

Step 3: use more green stuff to stick the head to the torso.

Step 4: more green stuff to sculpt the neck. I did my best to meld the green stuff to both the torso and the head. Spin cylinders and place them in the joint, then use sculpting tools and fingers to work the surface flat.

Step 5: attach the horns using more green stuff.

Step 6: smooth the transition with some more green stuff. Place very thin cylinders in the joints, then flatten using sculpting tools and toothpicks.

That is it!
