King of the Colosseum: Word Bearers vs Dark Angels, 28.10.2025

Instead of our usual competitive scenario, here's this little thing:

And here's 500 points of Chaos Marines, spearheaded by my fallen Lord and his Chosen with a complement of Cultists and Rubrics. On the other side, Deathwing Knights, kitted out Gravis Captain, Intercessors and Lieutenant.

I had to go first, so here I am braced for the charge. I had good secondaries and I scored a bunch of points.

Well I quickly learned that 3+ fight on death is almost worthless if all my 2 damage weapons do 1 damage.

Even falling back and charging in wasn't much of an advantage. Now the Rubrics did flame down the Intercessors...

... but with the Gladius, the space marines had unreasonable amounts of mobility. Fall back and shoot, advance and charge, whatever was needed.

I was quickly wiped, so we re-racked for a new game. This time I hid my Chosen. I still had to go first, so I tried for an assassination on the infiltrating Lieutenant, but my flamers failed me.

A very successful overwatch took down a Deathwing Knight, but then the Intercessors opened fire and the terminators charged, and lo and behold, I only had the Chosen left.

I just wanted to concede on the spot but my opponent wouldn't let me.

So I charged forth and beat up the Deathwing.

That took several turns, so in the meantime, the Intercessors and Lieutenant racked up all the points ever.

And that was best of 3, without playing 3.

TBH probably going second would have helped, or just passing my first turn and waiting for the opponent to advance. But the space marines were very mobile, and technically with good rolls they could have charged me turn 1 in my zone. They also had more units than me for scoring, but also somehow better at shooting AND close combat. I'm still stumped on what I could have done.
