Painting Stormlight shard bearers (and Bridge 4 display stand)

Yes I went all in on the Stormlight kickstarter. Here's the first couple of painted minis, with some experiments.

Bridge 4

This is the original state and color of the plastic. I wanted to take advantage of that drab brown and primed it using Munitorum Varnish.

Wet blend Agrax Earthshade, Nuln Oil, Athonian Camoshade and Seraphim Sepia. Just apply the washes and let them mix at the edges.

Drybrush Khaki, then Bonewhite.

Shard bearers

Fine, on to the interesting stuff. I have a bunch of GSW Color shifting paints. I have a working airbrush. Put two and two together...

First block in the bodies and spray the swords.

Then block in the swords and spray  the bodies.

First, let's see how they look.

Here's Adolin. Psychotic Illusions sword, Storm Surge Green armor.

Dalinar: Burning Gold sword, Mystic Gold armor.

Eshonai: Nebula Copper sword, Red Goblin armor.

Kaladin: Celestial Azure spear, Cobalt Blue armor.

Generic shard bearer: Toxic Purple sword, Martian Green armor.

The application went relatively smoothly for some, the gold colors were fine. However all blues suck. Celestian Azure blocked the airbrush on the first try. I tried thinning, it immediately transformed into colored water. Sigh. It took a lot of work, but I made them all work.

The looks... well, at least it doesn't have the issue as with the brush, that the paints flow into the recesses. However, any issues with the gloss black undercoat reflected tenfold. The surfaces are probably still not big enough for this kind of effect, some are barely visible. With the effort I put into airbrushing, I probably could have done something at least as good by hand. Sigh.

Alright, at least the regular parts went OK. Rugged wasteland base for everybody.

White clouds for Kaladin. Grey Seer basecoat, wash Tyran Blue and selective Nihilakh Oxide, then highlight Grey Seer and white.

Eschonai needed a Red cloth cloak.

And also a bright red head: Gory Red basecoat and Bloody Red highlights before the Orange Fire.

Finished!
