Painting Papal Palatine Guard

Time to formalize the painting of Palatine Guard as Krieger counts-as.

Prime white.

If the mini has a base, do Painting cobblestone (Contrast base).

Prepare two brushes. I used a size 3 and 0.

Big brush: paint the cap and shoulder decorations Nazdreg Yellow. Then paint the cap and cuffs Blood Angels Red.

Small brush: paint the collars Blood Angels Red. Also the underside of the officer's hat.

Big brush: apply Leviadon Blue all over the clothing, straps etc on the body.

Small brush: wherever the big brush wouldn't fit, such as in between the head and backpack.

Big brush: Black Legion on the cap visor.

Small brush: underside of the visor, shoes.

Big brush: Wyldwood any wooden parts, such as gun butts and drumsticks.

Big brush: Skeleton Horde bedrolls.

Big brush: Snakebite Leather backpacks.

Small brush: leather straps.

Small brush: Black Legion shoes tied to backpacks.

With that, the Contrast basecoats are done.

Big brush Leadbelcher over water flasks, modern guns, voxcasters and the like.

Small brush Leadbelcher over viewscreens, gunbarrels on old timey guns.

Bathe the model in Nuln Oil.

Literally everywhere.

Start the highlighting with small brush Chainmail Silver across all the silver areas.

Apply the final effects before non metallic highlights. Any basecoats use the large brush where applicable.

  • voxcaster lights: Silver basecoat, Iyanden Yellow, Silver highlights
  • Shiny gold aquilas on voxcasters
  • power sword: Silver coat on upper half, Aethermatic Blue all over then feather out on the upper 1/3
  • arm mounted screens: Silver, Blood for the Blood God!

Flamer tank: Gryph Hound Orange. Flamer nozzle: Snakebite Leather.

Melta details: Gryph Hound Orange tank, Iyanden Yellow barrel glow. Note that the minis, including the plasma details, are already passed the steps detailed in the next section.

At this point break out the wet palette.

  • red cap and  and cuffs: Hot Orange
  • yellow hat and shoulders: Moon Yellow
  • coat: 1:1 Ultramarine Blue/Off White
  • black shoes and caps: Cold Grey
  • bedrolls: Off White
  • backpack and other leather straps: Filthy Brown
  • wood: Beasty Brown
The only fancy detailing is for Blue plasma coils.

Paint varied skintones. Any minis where the skin isn't blotched over can be yellowy dark; those painted with bits of red or yellow can be dark; anything unsalvageable needs to be medium skintone.

Finally, paint the hair and facial hair. These are really small details, so just clean up with white if needed, and apply a Contrast/wash paint: Black Templar, Soulblight Grey, Aggaros Dunes, diluted Wyldwood.

As a last step, paint the puddle base or base rim black.
