My first foray into real conversion work on ASOIAF miniatures. I got a box of Umber Greataxes super cheap, with the intention of converting them. I also decided to create a scenic tray, with a raised middle.
Working on the tray
Drill out the the outline of where I intended to cut it. Drill a couple of holes close, step in with some old clippers. Then once there's a big enough space, fit in the hobby saw and go to town.
In the end I only cut out two spaces in the middle. Place some broken ice cream sticks as scaffolding, then glue the cut out piece on those. Don't forget to magnetize beforehand.
Glue on decorative elements: 3d printed trees and animals.
Fill out using milliput.
Terrain paste in preparation for Ice base. I found that paste instead of crackle paint works best on the inclines and small areas on the raised hill.
Paint the trees Dark wood, then paint the animals same as here.
Conversion
I got out all the bits I thought would be useful. In the upper left, some swords and shields from a GW undead kit. To the right and above, Chaos Marauder shields. Everything else is blades and banners from the Ogors kit, also miscellaneous knives and gut plates to be used as shields.
I thought about what to do with this banner bearer. The Ogor banner was way too large, so I settled on this Chaos Marauder (I think) banner.
Cut off at the grip and replace with a 2mm brass rod. Drill into the fist, and glue unto the banner.
Various weapon swaps. The knives from the Ogor kit work well as spearheads, and the undead swords make cool glaives. I stuck on undead and marauder shields on their backs and shoulders, with small blobs of green stuff ensuring stick-to-it-iveness.
I tried a green stuff fur hood to cover up some helmets, but the results weren't great. So I decided to cover up the chainmail instead on some of the guys.
Conversions finished!
Painting the miniatures
All the interesting parts of this project are already done, so go for slapchop. Then Ice base and medium skintone. There's only a bit of skin showing on the faces, so that's easy.
These minis obviously have chainmail and other metal bits, but I explain that with the Thenns knowing how to make bronze, and perhaps killing the odd Nights Watch member, or conducting forays south of the wall. However, caring for metallic objects isn't really embedded into their culture, unlike every other nation in Westeros. So I decided on experimenting with Corroded bronze and Rusty metal instead of the shiny Bronze I previously painted.
With such little of their faces showing, I could barely go in with diluted Ultramarine Blue for some face paint streaks. I did use the same paint on their banner, to draw the generic Free Folk mammoth skull symbol. Mix in some lighter color (I think Pale Flesh) from the wet palette for highlights.
