Painting a giant eagle

Introduction

Another cheap eBay find. After the Griffon, I wanted to try out a simpler color scheme for the feathers.

Preparation

As cheap eBay rescues tend to be, this one was in poor shape. It was glued using some kind of thick glue (possibly silicone?) which was spread all over its back. I had to scrape it off using a hobby knife. The paint was thick all over, but about a month in alcohol helped. The flying stand was broken into the socket, and I had to use my drill to remove the pieces.

Painting the feathers

Prime black.
Basecoat Charred Brown, drybrush Heavy Brown.

Mix Heavy Brown and Bonewhite 2:1, then drybrush the lower half.

Mix more Bonewhite into it (to about 1:1) then drybrush the lower 2-3 rows of feathers on the wings, lower half of the tail wings, and the lowest part of the torso.

With pure Bonewhite, drybrush the tips of the wings and the tail, and brighten up the lower back.

Finally, darken the feathers by applying Black Wash to the base of each row of feathers, then draw up in the middle of each feather, to accentuate the grooves.

Other details

Legs and beak same as for the griffon.

I initially did the eyes normally.

But then I looked at pictures of eagles and I realized that their "white of the eye" is actually yellow. Solved it with a layer of Lamenter's Yellow.

Also did the talons.

Basing

Woodland base. Mount on flying stand.

Finished!
