Magnetizing Astra Militarum Leman Russ sponsoons

Introduction

I will not follow this tutorial as I don't want the pieces to "push fit" a.k.a. scrape all the paint off each other. I will actually magnetize all the pieces such that they can be used interchangeably, as well as be mounted on an armory wall later on.

Magnetized sponsoon holder

The front hull gun has the same mounting, so it is handled identically.

Scrape into the interior of the mounting, enlarging the hole.

Like this.

Glue in a 5mm magnet.

Reinforce with green stuff.

Magnetized guns

Cut off the part that would normally go into the sponsoon mount. I initially tried to use a saw, but clippers will do just fine if you are careful.

Smooth out the back using the hobby knife.

Drill out the back. It sounds counterintuitive, but the fastest and easiest way to do this is a multi step  process. Mark with hobby knife; drill just a bit (1mm?) using a 1mm hand drill; go in with a 2mm power drill; then switch to 3mm power drill. In my experience, going in directly with the larger power drill bit can go sideways really quick, unless it has a guide hole.

Done!
