A fun little break from matched play 40k: 2v2 team game with 1000 points per player. I proposed a simple mission with 5 objectives and old school secondaries. We finally arrived at 5 points per objective (no cap), First Strike (5), Linebreaker (5), Slay the Warlord (5) and Super Slay the Warlord (10). The latter's idea came from needing to pick a 'super warlord' per team for the Knights' army rule. Teams, and everything else, were determined by the roll of dice.
Deployment: Dawn of War
Well, actually I already moved some models, being way too eager to start.
Battle round 1
We got first turn, and we quickly planned out our starting spite play: an assassination attempt of the Knight's warlord, also a freshly painted model, just the night before.
The Aeldari warlord also lead his Fire Dragons forwards.
Our assassination attempt was... unsuccessful, by a hair's breadth.
The Fire Dragons got back into their transport, and the turn was over.
Convinced that he was going to die, the Knight warlord moved on the aeldari.
The Helverin shot down the aeldari tank, but the Fire Dragons killed the Knight on overwatch. Otherwise, the rest of the forces moved up the table, taking objectives.
Battle round 2
Howling Banshees on the assault! One squad of Terminators rolled all the saves, while the other (in the squad shaped hole pictured on the left) made none and died.
The Lion rapid ingressed in plain sight, and all my tanks took their shots. However, the 3+ invulnerable save held.
While in our turn, it really seemed that we had secured our left flank and are safe to do an enveloping maneuver, our center was quickly contested. I tried an overwatch on the Lion, but scored 0 damage.
Some melta shots and charges later, here's my Rogal Dorn shaped hole, and the Leman Russ Commander on 1 wound.
Battle round 3
The back squad of Fire Dragons advanced on the Lion and took him out. Valentina the Tank Commander could not take down the Armiger.
I brought in my last reserve Hellhound, but every shot bounced off the center Terminators.
So the teams were pretty even on taking models off the board. However, we were holding 3 objectives.
The Leman Russ once again proved resilient, by making all its saves in melee and continuing to live at 1 wound.
Battle round 4
I counted on insane luck by shooting the Hellhound at the green Armiger first, with perhaps then the freed up Valentina taking out the blue Armiger. Against all odds, the Hellhound took out its target, but the Leman Russ barely scratched the paint. All D6 damages rolled 1.
However, the Fire Dragons advanced out (almost completely hidden in this picture) and obliterated the center squad of Terminators.
The opposing team was now losing on points. Time for desperate plays.
A perfect tank shock did 6MW, but still wasn't enough to take down his amazing Hellhound.
Deathwing Knights did their thing by charging the Banshees in our zone, and killing them all, after losing 2 models to Fights First.
Battle round 4
I sent up my back Hellhound to threaten the enemy backfield objective. Curse the Intercessors for making it sticky!
Speaking of Intercessors, the amazing Hellhound took them all out, while bumping fenders with the Helverin. Otherwise, Grenades might have ended that tank.
The blue Warglaive tried to kill the Aeldari warlord, but the Autarch managed to get away with 2 wounds remaining.
Battle round 5
Valentina stuck out her butt to take down the blue Warglaive. Flanking Hellhound took the enemy backfield objective. This left the opponents with just 2 units on the board: one Helverin in combat, and the Deathwing Knights happily holding our right backfield.
Final score
We named our team "Girl Power", because I was playing nuns, and half the Aeldari army was just Howling Banshees and Jain Zar. The opponents were Knights of the Imperial and Deathwing variety, so a common team there.
As the score shows, the game was pretty close during the first two rounds, with big kills and scores on both sides. But then the Lion died and my Russ didn't, and we held more objectives up to the end.
But more than just the score, the game was insanely fun and intense. Lots of arguments and back and forth between team members and opposing teams. We'll be sure to do this again in the future!
