Painting Frozen Shore Hunters & Varamyr Sixskins

I got these to paint in before the local tournament, and I had them almost finished in time.

Frozen Shore Hunters & characters

Their original state was quite... orange.

I applied the usual steps codified in Free Folk Raiders, only repainting the skin and facial/hair. This proved to be an interesting experiment going towards the slapchop technique, as I struggled with the dark brown areas. After the drybrush, I painted them over diluted Cygor Brown, and attempted a highlight Beasty Brown. Some areas underneath were lighter than the highlight, some weren't. I just think a proper slapchop needs better contrast between the layers.

I also experimented with the skin, having reddy feet on the cold ice. I painted them the usual way, except Carroburg Crimson instead of Reikland Fleshshade.

All the same applied to The Great Walrus and his cronies of Walrus Clan Chieftains. Jon Snow got a Black fur cloak.

Varamyr Sixskins & the Free Folk Zoo

Brown fur wolves. To conform with the artwork, I painted the eyes Striking Scorpion green instead of yellow, with no pupils. I did the same for all the animals.

Let's do something more interesting: the Shadowcat. Start with a basecoat of diluted Seraphim Sepia.

Half-coat of diluted Gore Grunta Fur.

Second coat.

I looked at some pictures of lynxes and they are actually a shade of grey-brown with even dark grey/black spots. Overall coat Apothecary White. Then Soulblight Grey.

Top it all off with a drybrush of Stonewall Grey, and a lighter white drybrush over the spine.

Paint the details: Black Templar ends of ears and tail; green eyes; Gore Grunta Fur nose.

Paint the polar bear first due to all the drybrushing involved. Paint the guy as above. Finally, on to the eagle. Do the same steps for the separate eagle on the tree.

Drybrush along with Varamyr.

Paint heavily diluted Wyldwood.

Deepen the shadows using Nuln Oil.

Heavy Goldbrown beak and feet. Green eyes.

And a shot of the big man himself.

Finished!
