Shadowdark demo session

We couldn't carry on with the Golden Vault due to missing players, so we did a quick Shadowdark intro instead. I couldn't even stay the whole evening, so... eh. Thoughts at the end.

Anyway, we were given level 0 PCs with no equipment, kidnapped by armed men from our village and thrown into a dungeon with a single torch at our disposal. We stepped forwards into the dark corridor, and searched the first room.

After a couple of tries, I found a barrel top to function as an improvised shield, and a dagger - perfect for my dexterous halfling, Motherfucker Jones.[1] We also found two shortbows but no arrows, and a pole.

We moved on into a creepy spot with three unhinged statues, representing the three stages of some sort of sacrifice.

Flesh. Bone. All.

Moving forwards into a chamber filled with water up to the knees... We moved the drain to retrieve a key, with no purpose at this point. In the water, we encountered some sort of gelatinous monster. I quickly wounded it with a couple of swipes of my dagger, to the great disappointment of the GM. The slime ran away by climbing up into a pipe.

Nothing to do in the dead end, so we went back to explore another chamber. This time, we found nothing interesting in the pile of old discarded crap. A wandering skeleton beset upon us, but once again I stood my ground, barrel top up, swinging my dagger. The other two crawlers kept charging in, hitting the skeleton with fist and foot[2], then moving back. Hitting it with scavenged bones and poles did nothing in particular.

At this point I had to leave, but I later heard that Motherfucker Jones died by being thrown into a vat of acid by his own comrades.

Fitting, I suppose.

Review... after playing an hour or so?

Right, so the game delivers what it promises: quick, rules light combat and serious, dark atmosphere. But I don't think it will replace D&D (for me or generally) due to it being seemingly totally combat focused. Not even that, but dungeon crawl focused. Sure, crawling through is fun sometimes, but I wouldn't want to do that full time. Again. Hint hint Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

[1] Note that the PCs were randomly generated by the DM beforehand, and I only asked for the one without a name. I had a backstory in mind, but never got to express it.

[2] Remember, no gear.
