Astra Militarum vs Thousand Sons, 14.10.2025

Still at it with the WTC style layouts. I'm never bringing another tank in this stupid game.

Magnus, double Mutalith, double Tzaangor Enlightened.

My latest Scion list on repeat, with copy pasted everything as many times as possible.

Battle round 1

The traitors spread around and do Recover Assets. I spread around to pounce on objectives but dare not show my face.

Except this squad of brave ladies. They killed a unit of Spawn for Overwhelming Force, then also destroyed a squad of Tzaangor Enlightened for good measure. The artillery killed the othersquad of Enlightened. Taking care of mobility, one squad at a time.

Points successfully denied. Obviously, a Mutalith and a deep striking Daemon Prince were enough to kill the squad and their transport. Points scored for actions.

Round 2 assault on all fronts go! I love this part.

Landed Aquilons in the center and disembarked a unit of scions to take care of the Tzaangor. Overkilled them and couldn't charge onto the objective. Sigh.

Brought in the squad from strategic reserves and overkilled the Mutalith. Those things are hard to kill, so I was fine with that.

Ran out the command squad and killed the second Mutalith with the help of the artillery. First two cannons did nothing, the third grossly overkilled. Sigh.

And obviously after all that, trying to bait out the defensive stratagems but to no avail, so the deep striking squad could not kill Magnus. Mega sigh.

At least I scored points with a sneaky Taurox in the far corner cleansing an objective and extending battle lines.

The traitors moved out, and a very successful overwatch from the inquisitor squad killed 3 marines. Unfortunately, that was the only thing I had going for me. Both psykers rolled 1's on Psychic barrier, so no invulnerable save. Magnus killed one squad, the Daemon Prince killed the other. Small Rubric squads flamed anybody in the center.

So not many points, especially with primary denied, but I lost way too much.

I did manage a heroic intervention, taking this objective.

On my turn, I scored some primary points - finally. However, my secondaries were a wash. I tried to regain some territory by falling back from combat and shooting down the marines with the disembarked squad. Lost the Taurox in the process.

Artilery shot down the marine squad in the center but couldn't kill the character. That would have been ace.

If I had been just 1" closer, I could have retreated unto the objective. Sad.

Battle round 4

Lots of points for the Thousand Sons. Also Magnus and the center marines moved out to kill my final Scion squads.

I had some plays left but the artillery failed to kill anything else and I scored no more points.

Conclusion

A very weak showing for the Guard given the final score, but it was 21-20 (not counting battle ready) and the end of round 3, so really close up to a point. I also know my mistake: I should have went for the daemon prince instead of Magnus, or just kept the squad in reserve. Perhaps keeping back more instead of going all out on turn 2 is the key here.

Anyway, the list is fun, both sides kill a lot but sweat while doing it, so mission accomplished. It's also pretty simple to learn the rules, with every unit type repeated to the max.
