Painting Krieg artillery teams

I had some Napoleonic infantry lying around, originally intended to be used as Conscripts. With that option gone from the codex, I decided to use them as Kriegers. I painted them in the colors of the Papal Palatine Guard.

Assembling and painting the guns

Dryfit first.

Paint the carriage and all the different options Dark metal. Paint the end of the cannons Muzzle burn.

Dryfit out of paranoia. At this I realized that the gun falls out at the slightest breeze.

I sunk an 8mm magnet into the carriage and drilled a 3mm into the guns. I should have went for 5mm, but alas.

Assembling and converting the crew

Assemble some crewmen, at this point I was just experimenting and dryfitting. Having a drummer give the timing of artillery shots and an officer commanding with his sword out seems very appropriate for Warhammer.

Then I got some great advice: make the spearmen cannon prodders instead! I cut off the spearheads.

And glued on some drilled out sponge instead.

It looked more like a broom, so I used scissors to chop it down on the sides.

Paint everything but the crew

Well the guns are already painted so paint the bases cobblestone and sandbags. Then pin the guns in place.

Paint the crew

Prime white.

Then lay on the Contrast basecoats:

  • Leviadon Blue coats (and everything else on the body)
  • Blood Angels Red caps and collars
  • Nazdreg Yellow epaulets and cap decorations
  • Black Legion cap visors and shoes
  • Skeleton Horde bedrolls and drums
  • Snakebite Leather backpacks and any straps
  • Wyldwood rifle butts, drumsticks and poles
  • Gore Grunta Fur drum bodies
  • Chainmail Silver any metal details: guns, drum casings, water canteens

Shade everything at once using Nuln Oil. Paint the skin Medium skintone.

Then highlight all the details:

  • 1:1 Ultramarine Blue/Off White
  • Hot Orange
  • Moon Yellow
  • Cold Grey
  • Off White
  • Filthy Brown
  • Beasty Brown
  • Silver
Paint the base Black Legion, then spray varnish.

Finishing touches

Pin the crews into place.

Finished!
