Painting the Mother of Dragons (and her dragons)

In a surprising twist of events, my man EndRush acquired a Targaryen army for ASOIAF. The dragons are very cool models, and in fact I got some for my own use, for D&D. Seeing the description of the dragons on wikis, I was inspired to paint them. It was a fun experience.

Painting Drogon

Prime black.

Drybrush the scales as per Shiny black. Drybrush the ends of the wings successive layers of Scarlet Red. Also paint a thick edge on the wing membrances, and all the back spines and plates.

The scales were too blue, so I coated everything in Nuln Oil (including the back plates, but not the ends of the wings).

Finally, edge the wings and back plates in Bloody red.

Painting Rhaegal

Prime Wraithbone.

Coat Striking Scorpion.

To achieve a jade color, coat 90% Aeldari Emerald, then feather out across the rest of the surfaces. That is the knuckles, belly.

Paint successive layers of Aeldari Emerald towards the back/ends of the wings, and feather out.

Paint the horns and eyes Bright Bronze. Paint the ends of the wings, then feather out. This took a couple of layers and a couple of tries, as feathering metallics with water across a non metallic surface is... weird.

Wash Reikland Fleshshade and continue highlighting as per Bronze.

Painting Viserion

Prime Wraithbone.

Wash Seraphim Sepia, then drybrush as per Warm white.

Paint the horns and eyes Glorious Gold, then also paint the ends of the wings and feather out, just as for Rhaegal.

Wash Reikland Fleshshade, then highlight as per Shiny gold.

Painting bases

Paint the trays as Dry cracked earth.

Now try and emulate that on the rocky dragon bases. Paint them Garaghak Sewer, or in the case of Drogon, Heavy Brown washed Agrax Earthshade.

Drybrush as above. It came out waay to light. So I applied a coat of Agrax Earthshade later.

Painting Daenerys

Prime Wraithbone, and paint her base as above.

I wanted a pale gold dress, so I went for a Polished Gold basecoat.

It was a bit too pale, so I coated it Nazdreg Yellow. Which, surprisingly, made it way too intense and yellowy gold.

I tinkered with it for a bit, and I forgot to take pictures. Basically relayer Polished Gold, then highlight by mixing in Silver.

Then paint Light skintoneCold white hair and Bright red sash.

Finished!
