Back to our regularly scheduled matched play games against the Custodes. This time I'm playing my refined Fellhammer Siegehost list, against an all-infantry Shieldhost in 2000 points of Linchpin.
Battle round 1
The Custodes went first, which was a blessing in this scenario due to all their deep strike shenanigans. They just sent an empty Rhino up the field to take objectives, which I dutifully shot up with my tanks. I then bubbled out to discourage deep strikers, by pushing out the Accursed Cultists on the left, the Raptors in the center (highly un-night lord-y behavior) and an empty Rhino on the right.
Battle round 2
The Custodes got aggressive on all fronts. One unit of Venatari dropped in on my left, everything else still in reserves. At least they got busy doing Sabotage.
Sisters of Silence flamed down my Accursed Cultists, but barely killed a couple. Kyria Draxus and her posse came out the middle and shot down the Raptors. I baited out their once-per-game-shoot-twice with a CP reroll on an armor save, leaving the Raptor champion to die in the second salvo.
Blade wizard & co chopped up the Rhino.
Chaos counterattack!
First, I drove up the middle and shot Kyria's squad with my tanks. The Rhino took the further objective, and the Wardens all died, leaving Kyria alone.
On the right, I marched the Chosen up to kill the Blade wizard squad, but more Guards deep strike by rapid ingress. I should have blocked off that corner with my final Obliterators; but I loathed to use a 170 points unit as a zoner. At least I had another squad aiming at them.
I sent in another squad of Obliterators to strengthen the left flank, and more Venatari rapid ingressed in as an answer.
With a spectacular roll, the Obliterators obliterated (hue hue) the first squad. I'm sure we'll never see it's like again.
I completely failed to kill a Guard using the Chosen shooting and grenades (curse you 5+ FnP stratagem), so I had the Obliterators ignore Kyria and shoot down 1 Custodes instead. Worth it for the rerolls.
Now I technically knew about the heroic intervention stratagem, but I completely forgot, so here's this clusterfuck of a melee mess.
I had placed high hopes on the Chosen doing well, but with -1 to hit and 4+ FnP, they did really poorly. You know what did just fine? Brutal attrition! 7 MW brought both squads severely down.
Battle round 3
Multiple charges all around; however, my opponent decided to start combat with an Eversor Assassin into my Legionaires. To be fair, he did kill off my Sorcerer; however, that gave me the opportunity to interrupt with the Chosen, and (due to rerolls and lack of defensive buffs) kill off both remaining squads, leaving only the Custodes characters.
The Blade Wizard mucked me up, but guess what? Brutal Attrition! This strat is really great against such elites. Leaving the Shield Captain facing the Chaos Lord, both alone.
In other news, the Sisters charged my Accursed Cultists, doing no damage but taking the objective. And the Allarus terminators came out of hiding, destroying my Obliterators.
With me scoring Assassination on the Custodes' turn and a lot of primary points, it was time to put the nail in the coffin.
It started with this unexpected roll:
... and the Shield Captain dying to bolt pistols. Leaving me unable to charge unto the objective.
Last Obliterators deep struck into the back field, shooting down Kyria with a melta TO THE FACE.
Finally, the Helbrute got bogged down in the Sisters.
I also shot my tanks at the Allarus and killed two models. Sigh.
Battle round 4
With only 2 units and a lone Sister in combat left, no home objective and action-type secondaries, the Custodes threw in the towel.
Victory for the good guys!
Not much to say here; there were spectacular rolls but also poor ones on both sides, so no advantage there. I feel that I really hampered the Custodes by bubbling out; I had learned my lessons the hard way during our previous games. The Allarus termies were not used to their potential by hiding for two turns. While my Brutal Attrition stratagem was MVP by doing a bucketload of mortal wounds.
