Painting commission fantasy miniatures

A batch of commission minis, just to break up the pace. I specifically asked only for already primed stuff, as it is too early in the year to break out the airbrush.

Snakemen

By Reaper. For some reason primed gold.

Take advantage of the primer and apply Terradon Turqoise and Ork Flesh, keeping the shine underneath for a scaly effect. Jungle baseMonstrous mouthmetallic swords

Werearmadillo

Also by Reaper and primed in gold.

Wanting to keep the shine, I did Cygor Brown on the armor and Aggaros Dunes on the flesh. While working on the Simplified wasteland base, I got the genius idea to do the drybrushes on the creature as well. However, I disliked the dusty appearance even more than the previous bland gold.

An overall coat of Agrax Earthshade solved everything.

Ankheg

Another Bones monster, primed in dark green.

I looked up some images and turns out some Ankhegs are green. Apply successive drybrushes of Sick Green, Goblin Green and Livery Green. Simplified wasteland base.

Werecrocodile

This Bones monster is primed in the same dark green.

So I followed the same drybrushing steps.

However, alligators are a lot darker and are patchy black. So I applied a coat of diluted Black Templar.

Jungle baseMonstrous mouth, Bonewhite teeth, Bloody Red eyes.

Driders

These dudes seem like they would be made by Reaper, but I couldn't find them on the site. They are primed in a zenithal highlight attempt.

So take advantage of that. Diluted Terradon Turqoise spider. Diluted Basilicanum Grey elf flesh.

Simplified wasteland base.

Arms and armor metallic, except for any decorated stuff, where I used Druchii Violet instead of Nuln Oil. Paint large crosses on the spiders: Heavy Red, highlighted Bloody Red. Then white hair and fletching, and finish off the wood and leathers.

Armored mercenaries

Made by Reaper. Sprayed dark silver.

Let's work with that! Coat Nuln Oil, drybrush chainmail silver. Call the armor and weapon tip done.

Map out the non metallic areas. Instructions were not to take them too far, just have some generic mercenary type dudes. I initially thought about a white cloth, but black goes over dark colors easier. Also do the leather and wood Heavy Brown.

Lich

The basecoat is good, I did not have to repaint anything.

Washes and Contrast paints galore! Druchii Violet and Drakenhof Nightshade on the clothes. Agrax Earthshade on the staff, sword, heart, sash. Also start working on the bone. Ratling Grime hair. Basilicanum Grey candles. Nuln Oil final step on the bones, also coat the hair.

Paint the metalics: highlight the sword pommel, then Shiny gold crown and pendant.

Then break out the wet palette. First work up to some painting tips:

Then highlight the rest. Instead of my usual broad highlights, I went for more muted colors - like he's been in a dungeon for a thousand years already. So the edges and spots are the midtone, mixed in Ghost Grey/Wraithbone. Ultramarine Blue, Heavy Violet, Heavy Brown, Hot Orange.

Touch up the base rim and we're done.

Medusa

More Reaper Bones, this time (over)primed in a light green.

The client's instructions was to do a Heroes 3-esque paint scheme. So I applied Militarum Green on the scales and Ork Flesh on the snakes.

An overall wash of Biel-Tan Green pretty much killed the effect on the scales, so I reapplied Militarum Green after the fact.

Finish off the green details with a light drybrush of Dead Flesh.

Simplified leather and wood - something I've been toying with for a while. Then paint the eyes red and Simplified wasteland base.

Goblin wolf rider

Primed in white.

Paint the wolf.

Try for a new kind of dirty cloth with a basecoat of Ratling Grime.

Followed by Nuln Oil.

Lay on Contrast basecoats to figure out how the mini will finally look.

Apply some painting tips:

Orc shaman

Reaper metal primed in white.

The client's instructions were to paint this guy differently than the identical model that I have. So instead of red clothes, let's go for reddish brown - still contrasting with the green skin.

Gore Grunta Fur basecoat.

Coat Agrax Earthshade.

Experiment with green skin. Basecoat Gutrippa Flesh. Coat either Biel-Tan Green or Athonian Camoshade (the flayed face on the book).

Highlight the leathers Parasite Brown. Barely noticeable.

So go in for some stronger Khaki highlights.

Finish off by highlighting both kinds of green skin Dead Flesh, then with some painting tips:

Simple greyscale hair.

Woodland base.

Finished!
