D&D 5E one shot collection - Grinding through the Slave Pits of Quabus

Last time, Dace had just barged in on some guards investigating the slaughter. Upon consulting his party members, he decided to turn tail and run. The adventurers prepared to ambush the guards, but none came - Groot heard the leading hobgoblin bark orders to set to defend.

Ulfgar decided to get a barrel and make Groot and Bernie crawl inside, then roll the barrel down. Sure. They went down into the darkness. With noone to fight, they let the barrel roll - to no adverse effects. And then the doors opened, and the guards threw javelins.

Dace charged in on the right, Ulfgar on the left. The barrel decided to stay put for some time, leaving the two to fight on their own. After some time, the reinforcements crawled out, and Bernie scored a headshot.

The adventurers advanced into the dungeon, encountering two women stirring a pot of stew. Even though I clearly said that they seem to be hiding something, the party decided to rescue them and escort them outside. Obviously they went through a route previously unexplored, and Dace fell into a pit trap. Bernie got him out using a rope, while Ulfgar held the door open with a looted spear. At all the racket, more guards came out. The adventurers let the women run, retreating themselves.

At this point we got into a rules debate regarding readied actions, which we all got tired of and Bernie got knocked out by javelins. The party retreated, only to run into the rescued women... standing in their way. Dace tried to barge through, but was surprised by the leathery texture he grabbed, instead of woman's clothing. The women then shed their illusory disguise, transforming into horrible monsters. The adventurers hacked at them, successfully eliminating the attacking guards and gravely wounding one of the witches. They turned invisible and ran away.

Dace was gravely wounded, but Bernie got away without a scratch, thanks to the Protect from Evil and Good spell cast on him previously. The adventurers debated what to do, and we ended the session there.
