Painting Spearwives and Free Folk characters

With the frequency I tend to put these girls on the table, it was time to paint them. I got the remainder of the Free Folk Heroes 1 box as well.

Initial state and steps

This is the original state of the Spearwives, their Matriarch, as well as Harma and her Bannerman. I already put down the putties in this picture. Follow the steps laid out here and here.

Rattleshirt

This handsome boy was just primed white. This allowed me to experiment with a contrasting cold-warm color scheme. Start by coating him overall in Apothecary White, then Gryph Charger Grey on the fur trim.

Very light white drybrush overall.

With the white, there is already a whiteish undercoat on the bone and leather, so carry on with Bone and Light leather

The Weeper

Also just white primed. Experiment with a Contrast-based on alternative for Brown fur. Basecoat the fur Agrax Earthshade, then patches of Gore Grunta Fur.

Drybrush the fur Bonewhite. Close enough.

Basecoat the rest of the details in Contrast colors, and apply the painting tips:  Bone and Light leather, etc.

Painting

With all the painting tips applied, including some varying hair colors for the girls:

I just experimented a bit with the wooden hafts; turns out Beasty Brown goes very well over Wyldwood (on a darker undercoat).

Finally, I definitely wanted a cold color for the fur trim, so I basecoated Grey Seer and coated Gryph Charger Grey. Characters get a white highlight.

I initially wanted diluted Contrast paints for the face tattoos, but I had some diluted bluish grey on the wet palette, so I used that. I reproduced the designs on the box art, did a couple of simple ones as well as a quick google search for more designs.

Basing

Ice base.

Finished!
