After a stern warning that the next session will involve plenty of combat, we got the briefing regarding a stolen astronomy tome or whatever. The sage Talistrom, former owner of the tome, was robbed by a former associate and academic, the noble Marcos Delphi. We visited the esteemed sage, who had already hired a band of adventurers to retrieve the tome, but they all died. Nice. For extra bonus points, we had to retrieve Marcos alive and save him from whatever malefic influence took over him.
The sage had little to say other than that. I forged a letter from an academic, hoping that we'll be able to enter without combat. However, it was not to be.
We hired a coach and approached the forest castle of Marcos in a hurry, only to be diverted by shouting from behind a bush. It turned out to be the talking head of Erra Lionheart, the leader of the first adventuring party to attempt the tome retrieval. After some toilet humor, we took the talking head back to their camp to get the floor plan of the castle. Erra's party had captured a servant and extracted the information from him.
Further questioning of Erra's head revealed that they were almost immediately attacked upon entering the castle. So we abandoned the front entrance and decided to go in through the roof. Lapis, our newest addition, a fairy druid, flew up to dislodge a couple of shingles and fasten a rope, which we used to climb up. Thanks for the guidance cantrips and Thaldor pulling us up!
The attic was empty except for the trapdoor opening into an empty bathroom. As we debated how to approach the task, Aris cast Detect magic and immediately triggered a special effect: the trapdoor grew fangs! Thaldor knocked out its teeth, but it still tried to chomp at us. I jumped through, and the rest travelled down inside our bag of holding.
I sneaked around with a ridiculous roll and looked into the surrounding rooms. When the party followed me through into the middle corridor, we were jumped by giant bat mosquitoes.
Next up we killed two ghouls (I shot one in the back of the head) and talked to a one-eyed dude who seemed amiable enough. He said he was transformed when his master made a deal with an evil entity, and that he will help us if we get some star map for him.
I also tried talking to the gigantic abomination standing inside the runic circle. He was less amiable, and I couldn't bluff my way through. We put it down.
We found a ghost rummaging through the maps, and I didn't manage to steal the one we were after. Arik turned the ghost, and we gathered everything. EVERYTHING. Then the ghost came back and we put it down.
I had pretty much enough of everything, so I kicked down the next door. Unfortunately, I happened upon two ghouls, and one of them messed me up. Lapis wildshaped to block the door, and we shot them down.
The final small room was a simple storage room, where we nipped a health potion.
Next up: back to the one eyed fellow and go through the rest of the mansion.
